Position Purpose:
The Library Tech position is critical to the operations of the academic library. This position enables the library to operate at a level that provides support to all of our users. The Library Tech helps students and other patrons to find appropriate materials for their course work/research, checks materials in and out, and presents a positive image of the library and of the college. Working knowledge of library classifications system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and ability to conduct research is essential.

Position Responsibilities:
• Staff the reference desk, providing information and access services that require judgment and informed appraisal of the user’s needs, based on thorough working knowledge of relevant library policies, procedures, tools and facilities.
• Serve as a front-line staff for digital information services, answering questions in chat, email queues, and making referrals as appropriate.
• Circulation duties including reserving, circulate, renew, and discharge books and other materials.
• Enter and update patron records in the library catalog.
• Prepares circulating materials.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research.
• Ability to:
– Apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.
– Operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, and complete forms and prepare reports.
– Communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:
• AA or AS degree in Library Science or related field.
• Library Science coursework with training or experience in library science
• Experience with online library catalogs and databases
• Interview skills
• Research skills
• Typing/data entry skills
• Customer service experience
• Willingness to participate in training to keep informed on current college issues and library developments
• Demonstrate knowledge of and an interest in diverse cultures and populations
