Position Summary:

This is a temporary appointment, running from January through May 2017.

Working as a member of a highly collaborative Access Services team, this position will perform duties relating to Course Reserves, Circulation, and Stacks Management.  As a member of the Bridge Consortium, the Access Services Associate works collaboratively and in tandem with peers at Carleton College to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced.  Additionally, the Access Services Associate may be asked to provide services to Carleton College and is responsible for participating in all appropriate Bridge working groups, meetings, and functions.

Position Description:

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Course Reserves (30%)

  • Promotes and manages Course Reserves.
  • Interprets library and copyright policies, processes incoming reserve material, and communicates with faculty in person and via e-mail.
  • Places acquisitions orders for in-demand materials.
  • Assesses workflow and makes recommendations for more efficient processing and improved service.
  • Processes statistics relating to use of Course Reserves.
  • Stays informed of trends in Reserves policy and processing at peer institutions.
  • Creates and edits written documentation of Reserves processing procedures.

Circulation (30%)

  • Assists colleagues in managing the Circulation Desk, which includes overseeing daily circulation functions such as checking materials in and out, paging materials from the stacks, and locating missing items.
  • Assists in the training and supervising student workers.
  • Continually seeks new ways to improve efficiency and customer service at the Circulation Desk.
  • Assists in creating and editing written documentation of Circulation procedures.

Media Equipment (20%)

  • Works closely with IT staff to facilitate the circulation of a growing collection of media equipment. This will include inventorying the media collection, assisting patrons in its use, and basic troubleshooting.

Stacks Management (15%)

  • Assists in relocating portions of the physical collection.
  • Supervises students in general stacks management duties, including shifting and shelving.

Other (5%)

  • Attends all relevant staff meetings scheduled during regular working hours; Participates on Library and Bridge teams/working groups as assigned; Serves as a backup to other staff as needed and as requested by the supervisor; Performs other duties as requested by the library leadership.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   Will assist in the supervision of student employees.

CONTACTS:  Students, faculty, staff, alumni, Bridge Consortium members, and the general public.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and the general public.
  • Technological proficiency with demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and systems.  Ability to incorporate new technologies and innovations into existing operations and workflow.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a face-paced, team environment.
  • Willingness to learn and understand the concepts, applications and best practices of copyright law and academic fair use for curricular support.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to sit; and ability to be mobile; and ability to lift 20 pounds, unpack and shelve books, and push carts of books as needed.  Ergonomic issues involving computer work that include repetitive motion, eye strain, back and neck strain.

TERM:  January 2017 – May 2017

SHIFT:  We are willing to consider the scheduling needs of the right applicant. Must be willing to work 40 hours/week between the hours of 8am and midnight.

Desired Qualifications:

EDUCATION:
Desirable:  Strong preference given to candidates with, or currently pursuing, a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS).

EXPERIENCE:
Desirable:  Experience with Ex Libris Alma Library Management Software. Work experience in an academic or public library setting.
