Position Summary:

The Reference Assistant serves as a staff member at the reference desk where, using electronic and print resources, he/she interacts with students, faculty, staff, and community patrons to locate materials to meet their research and information needs. As the library staff member in charge, the Reference Assistant serves as the building manager during evening hours. The Reference Assistant will work on a five evenings per week schedule (Sun-Thu) generally in a 4:00pm-midnight shift; hours will be shifted to accommodate a 1:00 am closing during finals weeks and the week prior. This is a nine-month position (mid-August through mid-May).

Essential Functions:

The Reference Assistant:

  1. Responds to requests for information from library patrons accurately and in a timely manner, teaches library patrons how to use the library’s electronic and print resources, assists with technical issues at library computers and printers.
  2. Performs basic procedures using the library management system, Sierra from Innovative Interfaces, Inc.
  3. Assumes responsibility for the overall operation of the Library on the assigned evenings.
  4. Organizes and successfully completes special projects as assigned.

Requirements:

Required:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution;
  2. Ability to assume responsibility for resolving issues with the building, patrons, and other problems that can arise in a public facility;
  3. Demonstrated mastery of a current-technology microcomputer operating system, such as Windows or MacOS, standard productivity application software, and web browsers;
  4. Ability to solve basic technical problems with copiers, printers, microform reader/printers, and other technology;
  5. Ability to work effectively with patrons of varying research interests and skills;
  6. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment with librarians, staff, and faculty;
  7. Two-year’s experience in a library setting, preferably in public services;
  8. Acquaintance with searching typical electronic reference products, such as products by EBSCOhost, Proquest, Gale InfoTrac or OCLC WorldCat.

Desired:

  1. Experience with a Library Management System, such as the III Sierra system;
  2. Ability to contribute in one or more areas of library activity, such as social media or other library promotion, archival document digitization, or other common library functions;
  3. Experience working at a service desk.
