Position Title: Interim Archivist
Position Summary: To assist patrons and researchers using the Archives of the Norwegian-American Historical Association (NAHA) and to accession, preserve, and maintain archival material for the Association.

This is a year-round, temporary position that is a one-year appointment (with potential for renewal).

Position Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Manage reference services for researchers — 40% of time
• Pull materials for in-person researchers and superintend reading room
• Respond to electronic, phone, and written inquiries
• Forward inquiries to other Special Collections staff, or refer researchers elsewhere, as appropriate
• In cooperation with the NAHA Director, maintain a shared Archives calendar and schedule patron visits
• Track patron contact and usage

Process archival material — 35% of time
• Respond to donation inquiries
• Accession new materials
• Acknowledge donations to the Archives

Serve as a liaison to the NAHA Archives — 10% of time
• Attend regular meetings with Special Collections staff
• Consult regularly with the NAHA Archives Committee
• Provide written quarterly reports to the NAHA Board of Directors and attend board meetings

Support the work of student assistants and volunteers on a project-to-project basis — 10% of time
• Consult on project planning with NAHA and Special Collections staff
• Provide training on archival techniques and processes

5. Other — 5% of time
• Contribute to NAHA newsletter
• Facilitate classroom visits
• Assist with tours of the NAHA Archives
• Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
• Working knowledge of archival and descriptive standards and practices
• Familiarity with archival best practices for preservation of documents, photographs, and artifacts
• Knowledge and an interest in the Norwegian-American immigrant experience
• Customer-service oriented, with the ability to work well with a diverse range of individuals, including those without previous experience conducting archival research
• Excellent written and oral communication, strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects
• Positive, flexible work ethic

Physical Demands: Occasional lifting of boxes, up to 20 lbs

Work Environment: Archives may contain dust or other allergens

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Experience: Employment or volunteer experience in an archive
Desired Qualifications:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master’s degree in history, library science, museum studies, or a related field
Experience: 1–3 years employment in an archive, historical society, or museum; Norwegian language skills

Shift (Days/Hours): 16-20 hours per week; hours are negotiable and are to be worked between Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Salary Hiring Range: $15.00-18.00
