Position Title: Archivist – Norwegian-American Historical Association

Position Summary:
To maintain, preserve, and accession archival material for the Norwegian-American Historical Association (NAHA); to assist patrons and researchers in the Archives; and to represent NAHA.
Position Description:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide reference services for researchers — 40% of time
• Respond to electronic, phone, and written inquiries
• Forward inquiries to other Special Collections staff, or refer researchers elsewhere, as appropriate
• Pull materials for in-person researchers and superintend reading room
• Maintain a shared Archives calendar and schedule patron visits, in cooperation with the NAHA Executive Director
• Track and record patron contact and usage
• Ensure patrons understand and follow archival guidelines
Maintain and manage NAHA Collections — 30% of time
• Monitor condition of collections; re-house as necessary
• Ensure locator systems reflect contents and current practices
• Identify duplicate or inappropriate items and guide de-accessioning
• Pursue new acquisitions systematically in accord with organization’s vision
• Process new collections
• Prioritize, manage, and/or oversee digitization of collections
• Prepare for move to new shared special collections facility
• Help to create new policies, procedures, and approaches to accessing materials in new facility as needed
Supervise student workers and archives volunteers — 10% of time
• Consult on and oversee archives project planning with NAHA volunteers
• • Provide training on archival techniques and processes
Assign patron reference queries as needed
Serve as a liaison for the NAHA Archives — 10% of time
• Attend regular meetings with St. Olaf College Archives and Special Collections staff
• Represent the NAHA Archives with other organizations and repositories, including developing potential cooperative projects.
• Consult regularly with the NAHA Archives Committee
• Provide written quarterly reports to the NAHA Board of Directors and attend board meetings
Educate public on Archives —10% of time
• Facilitate classroom visit
• Assist with tours of the NAHA Archives
• Contribute to NAHA newsletter
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of archival standards and practices for preservation of documents, photographs and artifacts; assessing donations; and processing collections
• Knowledge of metadata and collection management systems
• Knowledge of and interest in the Norwegian-American immigrant experience including historiography/history, geography, language and literature
• Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and/or groups
• Ability to communicate and interact effectively with members of the public
• Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with college faculty and staff, students, and the general public
• Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relationships with colleagues, constituents and volunteers
• Ability to stay organized while managing competing priorities and multiple items concurrently
• Ability and willingness to support, respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community including faculty, staff, students and constituents

Required Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master’s degree from a library program accredited by the American Library Association, from an archives program meeting the guidelines of the Society of American Archivists, or equivalent advanced degree with relevant experience; maintain a valid diver’s license and meet St. Olaf College driver authorization criteria with a satisfactory driving record
Experience: 1+ year experience working in an archives

Experience: Norwegian language skills; 1+ year experience working in an historical society, museum, or educational institution archives
