Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking an Archivist to work with and develop HCL’s archival and digital collections, improve public awareness and use of these collections, and to successfully engage with the community regarding the collections and services of the department.

HCL has a growing number of digital collections, most of which are drawn from its archival collections. The principal focus of these collections is historical materials about Minneapolis and Hennepin County.

HCL serves more than one million residents within Hennepin County. The library system offers more than 5 million books, CDs, and DVDs, materials in more than 40 languages, 1600 public computers, and an extensive website.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position includes:
• Assess, organize, and describe (process) archival collections, including collection review, arrangement, rehousing, inventorying, and weeding
• Create and edit archival finding aids compliant with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and departmental practice for archival collections
• Contribute to planning, modification, and documentation of departmental practices for metadata creation, finding aid creation, archival processing, and digitization activities
• Perform preservation treatments (cleaning, repairs, encapsulation, relabeling) on archival materials
• Create and edit descriptive metadata using Dublin Core elements and departmental practice for digital collections
• Prepare digital collections for upload to the digital content management system
• Reach out to community organizations; develop and maintain relationships and collaborate to create services and programs that fit local needs and interests and that reflect the mission of HCL
• Develop and maintain the department’s vertical file collections
• Train and assign duties and tasks to support staff, interns and volunteers
• Provide excellent customer service to community members of all age and abilities and from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
• Contribute to creating a welcoming, engaging, and safe learning environment

Best Qualified Candidates will have:
• An ALA (American Library Association) accredited master’s degree or higher in library science or information science.
• Archives certification, such as SAA Certification, or completion of an archives concentration in a graduate-level program, or other significant coursework in archival process and management
• Experience in:
– Processing, arrangement, and description of archival collections, including born-digital content
– Creating, editing, and transforming metadata
– Managing archival projects, with evidence of successful project planning, management, and completion with the ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows
– Developing programs, displays, social media, and other community engagement efforts
– Providing information service to the general public
• Familiarity with the history and locales in Minneapolis and Hennepin County
• Ability to be patron-focused and flexible, adjusting services delivered as community needs, resources, and technology evolve
• A commitment to public service and experience providing customer service, instruction, and/or outreach to customers of all ages and backgrounds
• Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
