Grant-Funded Archivist (3 PT open positions) – Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Group (Mendota, MN)

The Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Group at Mendota has received a Legacy Grant to review and organize their archives. We are taking applications for the following positions.

1)     Lead Archivist

2)     Support Archivist

3)     Assistant Archivist

Objectives: The purpose of the grant is to fund the review of the tribal archives (several dozen boxes) and decide which documents should be digitalized. The documents need to be categorized and organized, and recommendations for preservation should be made.

Once this phase is accomplished, further funds will be sought to digitalize the archives and make them available for tribal members and other seeking information about their heritage, family ties, local history, etc.

Professional Requirements: The Lead and Support Archivists should have familiarity with handling tribal records and have the necessary experience and training to guide their judgement about effective categorizing, organization, digitalizing, and preserving the documents.

The Assistant Archivist should have an interest in tribal documentation, organizational ability, communication skills, and computer competence. This could be an ideal position for someone motivated and interested in further study and work as an archivist or in a related field.

Timeline and Location: These are flexible part time positions requiring coordination with the Tribal Chairwoman, Sharon Lennartson and others at the Tribal Office in Mendota. The Tribal Office is the worksite. The time estimate is 4 to 5 months to complete the review of the Tribal archives.
