TITLE OF POSITION: Programming and Outreach Assistant Librarian
LOCATION: North Mankato Taylor Library
TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Library Director
HOURS OF WORK: Position involves a minimum of 40 hours of work per week. Work hours may vary. Occasional overtime may be required. Evening and weekend schedules required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION: Associate’s Degree with library or programming experience. Minimum of one year of professional experience in a library setting, with supervisory and administrative experience preferred. Requires good communication and customer service skills. Bachelor’s Degree with library or programming experience preferred. Experience with the SIRSI online catalog helpful. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION:
NATURE OF WORK: Under the general direction and supervision of the Library Director, the Programming and Outreach Librarian performs responsible functions requiring considerable judgment and initiative in planning and overseeing programming and outreach services to young adults and adults. Responsible for providing assistance to library patrons.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS MAY INCLUDE:
1. Library Programs. Initiates plans, and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by young adults and adults, including but not limited to, films and special events, reading clubs, and school and community outreach. Actively seeks program presenters and exhibitions. Researches write and acquire grants to support library programming, Promotes programs by producing publicity releases, flyers, and monthly calendar.
2. Enforces Library Rules and Policies. Enforces library rules and policies regarding the use of library materials and equipment.
3. Performs Library Services. Assists in the selection and acquisition of library materials and equipment. Reads professional journals to help in the selection of Young Adult materials. Makes recommendations for improvements in library services. Checks out books and provides other services to library patrons. Provides reference services to the public.
4. Library Activities. Provides direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding the use of library materials, equipment, and services. Circulates library materials. Answers reference questions. Researches complex questions. Uses a variety of computer databases, electronic resources and computer software packages. Has access to and maintains the integrity of confidential customer information. Interprets policy and explains procedures to the public. Responds to customer concerns and complaints and conducts conflict resolution. Provides assistance to the public in the operation of library computer systems. Assists with the processing and shelving of library materials. Provides assistance to library patrons in the use of the Library Overdrive application. Coordinates library activities with other library systems as required.
5. Participation in Continued Training. Attends professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions. Completes special projects and tasks.
6. Performs Other Duties as Assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position requires inside work, working with others, working with and around others and having contact with the public. This position is exposed to normal levels of dust and noise. This position involves approximately seven hours of sitting and one hour of walking or standing per day. Activities that
occur occasionally or 1-3 hours a day are handling, far vision, depth perception, accommodation, and color vision. Activities that occur frequently or 4-7 hours per day are near vision and peripheral vision. Activities that occur 1-3 times per week are kneeling
bending stooping, squatting, pushing, climbing height other than a staircase, reaching at
or above shoulder level with the right, left or both shoulders, and lifting weights up to 40 pounds. Reaching below shoulder level with the right, left or both shoulders may occur up to three times per day. Activities that occur continuously or more than seven hours per day are fine manipulations, speaking, and hearing.

EXAMPLES OF EQUIPMENT UTILIZED: Operates office machines including typewriter, computer terminal, calculator, copy machines, and other equipment as necessary.
