The Mayo Clinic Libraries are adding a position for an experienced full-time librarian to perform advanced level cataloging and provide technical services expertise for their large network of libraries. The Librarian IV reports to the Supervisor of Technical Services and Collection Management, working cooperatively with Mayo’s senior cataloger. The Librarian IV will work in the Mayo Clinic’s central library, the Plummer Library, in Rochester, Minnesota.

This is a full-time professional position with benefits. Review of applications will begin by April 5, 2019. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Preferred start date is June 1, 2019.

Responsibilities
• As a primary team member, the new librarian is responsible for cataloging, digitizing and other collection management duties in the care and preservation of diverse collections
• Helps train, evaluate, and guide technical services staff to ensure compliance with national and local standards such as MARC, RDA, AACR2r, LCSH, LCCS, OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards
• Applies knowledge of relevant international and national standards, rules and best practices plus in-house standards for creation, analysis, enrichment, normalization and maintenance of metadata at levels ranging from sets to bibliographic records, items and holdings
• Catalogs collections using the Library of Congress cataloging and classification systems
• Creates original catalog records for contribution to OCLC, maintains the accuracy of Mayo Clinic’s catalog records, enhances cataloging provided by other libraries and vendors, assists with authority control and the bulk loading of bibliographic records into the library catalog
• Assists in developing & enhancing local cataloging standards and contributes to the compilation of local cataloging data reporting
• Participates in planning, implementing, and configuration of the integrated library system as it pertains to cataloging functions and public display
• Cooperates in the day-to-day operations of the Cataloging unit
• Works collaboratively with other librarians and paraprofessionals to manage access to collections and further initiatives of the Mayo Clinic Libraries
• Delivers high-level customer service, including answering questions, recommending resources, providing instruction and/or educational sessions. Seeks new ways to improve efficiency and customer service
• Maintains currency in knowledge of emerging trends, best practices, and technical skills to support new initiatives

Position description
The Librarian IV is an advanced level position in the Masters-prepared professional Librarian series. Under minimal supervision, the Librarian IV performs highly professional level responsibilities encompassing library science, information management, information technology, or library leadership. This level demonstrates substantial knowledge of a subject area or professional expertise in several areas. The Librarian IV may independently manage a work unit, a service area with one or more service points or a branch library and may supervise professional and non-professional library staff. This position will perform work technical services, systems or library leadership. Technical services responsibilities may include acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, database/electronic resource access and/or serials management in support of the Mayo Clinic Library system. Leadership responsibilities may include personnel management or project planning. Regularly participates on several library committees or task forces. Regularly provides input, develops and applies Library policy and decision making to support the Mayo Clinic Library system.

Qualifications
An ALA-Accredited masters’ degree in library science or information management is required. A minimum of three years’ experience as a cataloger is required. For institutionally designated management or supervisory positions, management or supervisory experience required. Additional qualifications
Proficiency using OCLC and performing original and copy cataloging in all formats. Familiarity and knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, both existing and emerging such as AACR2, RDA, BIBFRAME, RDF, LC-PCC, LCRIs, LCC, MeSH, MARC21, CONSER, DC and Linked Data. Experience with an integrated library system (ILS) preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.’s Sierra system. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrates analytical problem solving, project planning skills, and time management expertise. Works effectively both as a team member and independently.

Position Preferences: Cataloging experience in a university or academic health sciences library. Familiarity with medical and scientific terminology. Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages. Membership in MLA’s Academy of Health Information Professionals. Experience in cataloging special collections, archival materials, and digital collections. Knowledge of bibliographic utilities and vendor services, authority control services, tools and routines for metadata maintenance. Knowledge of methods such as SQL, XML, MARCEdit. Experience in management and training technical services personnel.

Professional Development Expectations: Ongoing personal knowledge development to include new technologies and changing standards and apply those new technologies and standards to local workflows. Study issues in cataloging and publish or present the results. Monitor ListServs for Cataloging and Technical Services information (i.e. IUG, OCLC, AUTOCAT). Work collaboratively in local, regional, national and both in person and virtually, to solve problems, learn, grow and develop. Adhere to ALCTS Core Competencies for Cataloging and Metadata Professional Librarians.

Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approximately $2,348.80, based on a full-time position.
