Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education and two years of related work experience (a combination of related education and work experience equal to six years may be substituted)
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong work ethic, and attention to detail
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative with projects and see them to completion
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and outreach
  • Ability to work on a team and individually in a project-oriented environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program and/or MA in a humanities field
  • One or more years of experience in a special collections library  
  • Experience with digital collection technologies
  • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages
  • Background and education in history, legal history, or law

About the Job

The University of Minnesota Law Library seeks candidates for the position of part-time Special Collections Assistant. This position will assist in the ongoing activities of the Riesenfeld Rare Books Research Center, which provides a secure and climate-controlled space for the Arthur C. Pulling Rare Books Collection. The collection contains over 25,000 volumes and is recognized as one of the leading legal rare book collections in the United States. In addition, the Riesenfeld Center houses the Law School’s archives, preserving the history of the Law School. The Special Collections Assistant will report to the Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake projects to organize, maintain and preserve the Center’s rare book and archival collections
  • Assist in the planning and design of special collections exhibits in physical and digital formats
  • Assist in organizing and staffing Riesenfeld Center events
  • Create digital and print content to promote the Center’s collections
  • Provide support for digitization initiatives, including uploading files and creating metadata
  • Help to provide reference assistance related to the Center’s collections
  • Provide assistance in researching and identifying new acquisitions

Salary and Schedule

  • $19.26 / hr. (minimum).  Part-time, 14 hours per week.

About the Department

The University of Minnesota Law School’s Stefan A. Riesenfeld Rare Books Research Center holds one of the outstanding collections of rare legal books in the United States. The books form the Arthur C. Pulling Rare Books Collection, more than 25,000 volumes of rare and special texts printed from the fifteenth through twentieth centuries. The Collection is a resource for the study of American and English law and history, as well as continental and other law, and is open for the use of students and visitors.
