POSITION SUMMARY

The Reference Librarian will provide a variety of professional library services including reference and research services to library users, teaching instructional sessions, assisting with library website development and online services, as well as assisting with collection development.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promotes good public relations with friendly, competent professional reference service to all library patrons.
  • Provides advice and support to students including interpreting usefulness of reference materials for student projects, advises students on selection and focus of topics for research papers, and guides students in development of effective search strategies.
  • Prepares bibliographies, database guides, and other user aids.
  • Researches, evaluates, and selects library materials to assist in maintenance and upgrading of print and electronic reference and circulating collections.
  • Initiates, plans, and develops tutorials and supporting instructional materials for specific databases or research needs and specific user groups.
  • Collaborates with faculty in development of instruction sessions tailored to the curriculum, class assignments and student readiness.
  • Provides answers to reference inquiries.

Work Experience

  • Experience in academic librarianship preferred. Theological knowledge preferred.

  • Knowledge of academic print and electronic reference sources.
  • Strong commitment to public service and ability to provide proactive, courteous, and prompt services to library users.
  • Able to effectively teach the use of print and electronic resources.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills to work positively with faculty, students, and administration, and staff. Able to work well as member of a team.
  • Possesses database searching skills.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Possesses good planning, organization, and time management skills. Able to meet deadlines.
  • Exhibits a willingness to contribute to new projects and programs.
  • Committed to professional development and to the enhancement of user services.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and stress management skills. Able to work calmly and effectively despite interruptions in public service work.
  • Basic knowledge of library and computer equipment operation and maintenance.

Education/Credentials

  • ALA accredited M.L.S. or M.L.I.S with a background in theological studies preferred. MA in Theology (or related field) at minimum.

Technical Skills

  • Able to use word processing, spreadsheets, and other computer applications in a Windows environment.
  • Knowledge of HTML and an understanding of authentication protocols desired.

Workplace Factors:

  • Must be able to navigate about the building assisting users in locating research materials.
  • Must be able to obtain materials stored on bookshelves.
  • Must be able to move book carts of materials used in library orientation classes.
  • Must be able to lift books and push filled book carts.
