Purpose of this Position
The Reference and Instruction Librarian Liaison for Sciences is a shared position between St Olaf and Carleton Colleges, reporting to and reviewed by Head of Reference and Instruction at Carleton College and Head of Research and Instruction at St Olaf College.

This position will spend approximately 50% of their time at each college and as a result serve as a conduit between the two collaborative departments. This position will help define new approaches to liaison librarianship in the natural sciences, develop creative outreach practices, engage with new pedagogies, and support digital scholarship across interdisciplinary communities.

The Reference and Instruction Librarian Will:
• Design learning experiences and provide innovative instruction to enhance research practice and support information literacy in the natural sciences.
• Offer research help to students and faculty throughout the research cycle, from discovery to information and data management to the development, dissemination, and stewardship of research products.
• Develop a dynamic outreach program that facilitates the success of varied teaching, learning, and research endeavors, including local and networked collaborations, interdisciplinary projects, entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives, new pedagogical models, and original undergraduate student research.
• Engage with the science community in the library, the classroom, and the lab.
• Collaborate with other librarians and college stakeholders to engage with open science, open data, reproducibility, bibliometrics, scholarly communication, and other key science literacy issues.
• Design online, open, and traditional educational resources, and work with faculty, library colleagues, academic/instructional technologists, and others to design innovative courses and assignments.
• Provide one-on-one instruction at the Research/IT desk, in appointments, and during information literacy instruction sessions in a manner that supports the curriculums and missions of the Colleges.

Essential Job Functions – Responsibilities
• Maintain and continuously develop subject expertise in order to provide faculty, students, and staff with specialized professional support to liaison departments and programs. Assist in the development of the students’ critical thinking skills.
• Reference/Research:
– Participate in general reference responsibilities in person, on the phone, through email and via chat.
– Provide individual student research consultations.
• Create and maintain course, subject, and general online research guides.
• Partner with faculty and academic staff to plan and deliver course-integrated instruction in information literacy and research practices.
• Investigate and develop outreach methods and practices in St Olaf College’s Regents Hall and Carleton College’s Integrated Science Facility, currently being constructed.
• Support the libraries’ efforts to participate in:
– Campus curricular initiatives.
– Campus curricular and research support services.
– Development of information literacy on campus.
• As appropriate: participate in national, regional, and/or local associations and professional groups; contribute to the scholarship of the profession; and, share new information and knowledge with academic colleagues
• Work collaboratively and in tandem with peers at Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges as a member of the Bridge Consortium.
– Serve on inter-collegial teams, task forces, and working groups as projects and initiatives require.
– Participate in Bridge Consortium meetings and functions in order to provide access to joint library resources.
• Other duties as assigned

Specialized Areas of Responsibility:
• Provide individual research support to sciences faculty and students.
• Teach information literacy skills to science students within the context of their courses.
• Assist in developing and maintaining the collections in liaison areas.

Required Qualifications
• MLS from an ALA-accredited program.
• Bachelor’s degree in a science or related discipline.
• Must have a practical mode of transportation between the Carleton and St.Olaf libraries as one will not be provided by either campus. Occasionally it will be necessary to have a physical presence at both Colleges in one day.
• Creativity and interest in innovative approaches to reference/research assistance, instruction, and liaison work.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues and trends in reference, information literacy, open science, open data, reproducibility, bibliometrics, scholarly communication, and other key science literacy issues.
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and build partnerships.
• Effective time, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to work independently and as a member of collaborative teams.
• Demonstrated ability to work proactively and effectively with faculty.
• Demonstrated experience with electronic bibliographic management systems such as EndNote, Zotero, and/or Mendeley.

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in a science or related discipline.
• Experience working in an academic or health sciences library with undergraduate students.
