DESCRIPTION: This position exists to develop and coordinate student and teacher services for the statewide History Day program in Minnesota through partnerships with colleges and universities, historical organizations, libraries and archives. The Program Specialist will deliver educational programs for students in grades 6-12; lead the development and delivery of either the college-aged mentor program; and assist in the delivery of library programs; assist with development and delivery of curriculum materials; assist and deliver professional development programs for teachers; coordinate collaborations with other MNHS departments and historic sites to serve History Day participants; and design and develop teaching materials as needed for these programs.
The Program Specialist will be responsible for coordinating the work of undergraduates “mentors,” who will be assigned to working with students and teachers participating in National History Day. The incumbent is responsible for recruiting, training, and assignment of mentors to schools; facilitating communication between the program, mentors, and teachers; and administering program logistics between the Minnesota Historical Society and participating colleges and universities. A particular emphasis for the mentor program is supporting rural, urban, and suburban schools with underserved students. The Program Specialist should be familiar with working with communities of color, varying school settings between urban/rural districts, and have previous experience with the pedagogy behind social emotional learning.
SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) Lead the design, development and implementation of major History Day program initiatives (mentor program) to support participating students and teachers through partnerships with schools, educational organizations, historical/cultural organizations, businesses, and community groups/leaders; 2) Work with internal and external partners, create and implement plans for delivery of History Day curricular resources and programs; and 3) Under the direction of program leadership, plan, research, and develop engaging curricular resources and programs for K-16 History Day teachers and students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in history, education, or humanities discipline or related field plus five years experience working in historical research, education, program delivery, or program development or curriculum development or equivalent education/experience OR advanced degree plus three years related experience.
Effective communication skills, including ability to write clearly and concisely and effective oral communication with individuals and groups.
Understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy and social-emotional learning techniques.
Previous experience working with external partners, including community groups or organizations, to deliver programs and/or services to the public.
Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently to complete projects.
Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
Knowledge of history research methodology and data gathering techniques, including ability to conduct original research in primary source collections, synthesize research, and communicate findings.
Computer skills necessary to develop quality project and program documentation.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to travel throughout the state and nationwide.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years previous experience as some form of participant in the History Day program.
Language skills outside of English.
General knowledge of Minnesota and United States history.
Master’s degree in history, American Culture studies, museum studies, or a relevant field.
Six years previous experience developing interpretive programs for school and museum audiences.
Eight years previous experience delivering interpretive programs to diverse audiences.
Previous experience developing and writing curriculum for K-12.
Familiarity with Minnesota Historical Society interpretive programs, including K-12 programs and/or exhibits.
Previous experience creating training materials and/or conducting training for interpreters or volunteers.
General knowledge of Minnesota and United States history.
