SALARY:    $17.39 hourly minimum

STATUS & HOURS:    Part-time (approximately 1,040 annual hours) project position through June 30, 2024.  The majority of hours worked from May – August.  Reduced hours during the remainder of the year, including some Saturdays. Hours may vary according to seasonal site needs

DESCRIPTION:  This position exists to present interpretive programs having mastered a variety of techniques, serve visitors in the museum store with advanced knowledge of memberships and products, assist in leading the daily operation of the site, provide high quality customer service to visitors of the Forest History center, and train, coach, and mentor Program Facilitator staff, interns, and volunteers.

The Program Facilitator will convey information about the the site’s cultural landscape history, environmental history, natural history, ecosystems, and wildlife, as well as interpret displays, exhibits and program content using outdoor experiential and adventure-based learning methods, inquiry, hands-on engagement, discussion, discovery, and other interactive techniques in outdoor and indoor settings.

SUMMARY OF WORK:  1) Present education programs, guide tours, facilitate activities with advanced mastery of content knowledge, as well as provide demonstrations and presentations using multiple refined interpretive and responsive teaching techniques; 2) Perform museum store sales, admissions sales, and clerical services; 3) Receive, welcome and orient visitors to the site; 4) Assist in the maintenance and protection of the site’s grounds, facilities, and equipment; 5) Study site-related materials to enhance the delivery of the sites interpretive programs; 6) Assist with providing lead day-to-day work direction to staff, volunteers and interns; 7) Work in program areas that require special skills and/or training; 8) Conduct directed research to help improve, update, or develop programming; 9) Perform administrative tasks as assigned; and 10) Follow site safety procedures

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to provide consistent, high quality customer service.

  • Experience mentoring, coaching, training, and providing work direction for staff or volunteers.

  • Demonstrated success in conveying program content and facilitating dialogue with guests using a variety of techniques.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take individual initiative while also being able to collaborate effectively and contribute positively in a team environment.

  • Proficiency in using a computer to conduct research, write reports, create spreadsheets in Word or Google.

  • Strong oral communication skills, and ability to listen and be responsive to questions and comments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse public in a friendly and open manner, while conveying information or teaching.

  • Demonstrated punctuality.

  • Demonstrated ability to think imaginatively and problem solve.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines, prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Ability to work a variety of assignments, including but not limited to retail and admissions software, site orientation for guests, and interpretive stations.

  • Willingness to complete all required safety training, including first aid and CPR, watercraft rescue, emergency response, etc.

  • Ability and flexibility to work a varied schedule and to be available to work the designated position hours as per the Job Posting.

  • Basic accounting and math skills.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and walk up to 5 miles a day in heat, cold, rain, and snow.

  • Ability to bend, crouch, kneel, reach, push, and pull.

  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Experience canoeing or kayaking and the ability to swim.

  • Comfortable working near or with draft horses.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Proven skill in delivering programs as an Interpreter II at Forest History Center.

  • Experience working with children and/or adults in an educational environment.

  • Experience in teaching, museum interpretation, theater, storytelling or group leadership.
