SALARY:    $4,925.00 monthly minimum, commensurate with experience

STATUS & HOURS:    Full-time, regular (approximately 2,088 annual hours) position.

DESCRIPTION:  The Production Manager position exists to provide leadership and direction for all aspects of production and project management for exhibitions and other interpretative projects of the Minnesota Historical Society.

This position exists to plan, manage and supervise the implementation of exhibits and other related interpretative projects that make history entertaining and educational for the general public, including exhibits at the History Center Museum, historic sites, and for the traveling exhibit program. The Production Manager provides the overall management and direction for the implementation of projects that intellectually and visually meet the criteria established by the development and design process and that convey information to the intended audience, meeting content and learning objectives while staying within budget and schedule timeline.

SUMMARY OF WORK:  1) Manage the administration of the Production Unit including but not limited to staffing, budget, and policy development; 2) Direct exhibit production and implementation process; 3) Develop long-range and annual plans for unit operations that deliver on exhibit commitments and support institutional goals and initiatives; and 4) Advocate for production in departmental planning, scheduling, and budgeting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Expert knowledge of exhibit production management, methodology, and processes.
  • Five or more years of museum exhibit production experience.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds, more than 30 with a team lift.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, kneel, reach, push, and pull.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS IN:

  • Strong skills in human relations, personnel management, interpersonal communication, team building, tact and diplomacy.

  • Ability to organize and oversee the work of others to plan and realize complex projects.

  • Ability to communicate orally with individuals and groups.

  • Ability to compile and synthesize verbal, written and visual information into production strategies and work plans.

  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate schedules and budgets.

  • Ability to manage efficiently and simultaneously several projects on discrete timetables.

  • Expert skill in and knowledge of techniques for estimating labor and materials costs for a wide variety of production tasks from rough carpentry to mount making.

  • Strong research skills in sourcing and selecting materials, supplies and contractors.

  • Ability to write clear and accurate specifications.

  • Ability to evaluate vendor’s proposals and workmanship.

  • Expert knowledge of architectural and exhibit fabrication and production techniques.

  • Knowledge of conservation guidelines and proper handling of artifacts.

  • Working knowledge of computers for use with database, spreadsheet, word processing and computer aided design software.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in service delivery and operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take individual initiative while also being able to collaborate effectively and contribute positively in a team environment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Background in historical administration, history museum studies, history or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks.
