Part Time Instruction Librarian – Capella University

Description

This is a part-time position that is responsible for developing and delivering instruction for Capella University learners, faculty, and staff, as part of Capella University Library’s information literacy and instruction program.    As a member of the Curriculum & Instruction team, this position collaborates with faculty to provide market-aligned liaison services, including: course development support, instructional design of course-embedded  Information Literacy modules, and digital collection resource exploration for new products and accreditation efforts.

Responsibilities

Develop and deliver information literacy programming and library instruction services (typically (typically 40 – 50%)

  • Collaborate with faculty to scaffold information research competencies into the curriculum, promoting learners’ academic and career success.
  • Design learning objects that develop research skills for traditional courses, direct assessment courses and curriculum pilots.
  • Conduct live instruction, including, consultations at doctoral residencies.
  • Conduct pre-launch reviews of new and revised course, to ensure high quality library assignments.
  • Attend course kick off meetings.
  • Design and submit course fixes for assignments with high call volume.
  • Produce discipline-oriented library research guides.
  • Conduct regular reference services for Capella learners.

Develop library collections, contributing specialized analysis and competitive review, to market-aligned resource decisions (typically (typically 15 – 20%)

  • Participate in collection development, including the identification and evaluation of high-quality, relevant online databases and reliable digital resources.
  • Assist lead program faculty and Subject Matter Experts in the identification or development of resources for courses.
  • Develop knowledge of academic subjects, disciplines, and resources in the assigned academic program.

Participate as an active member of the library team to accomplish library and departmental goals (typically 10 – 15% of duties)

  • Attend department meetings.
  • Participate in goal setting and planning processes.
  • Remain current on technologies or trends that enhance teaching and learning.

Qualifications
  • MLS from an ALA accredited institution
  • 3 to 5 years demonstrated expertise in the delivery of online and face-to-face library and information literacy instruction
  • Energetic, client-oriented, motivated to enhance learners’ academic and career success.
  • Knowledge of information literacy concepts and national guidelines.
  • Knowledge of best practices in instructional design preferred.
  • Experience working with adult learners and delivering services and instruction to a diverse population
  • Knowledge of online databases, library and information technologies
  • Experience with online teaching and learning
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member with diverse faculty, staff and learners in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment.
  • Specialized degree or course work in Psychology preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and instructional skills
  • Strong commitment to accurate and responsive help services
  • Demonstrated ability using computer applications, such as Microsoft Office , SnagIT, Libguides and Captivate
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Some travel required.

This is an on-site position located at Capella’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters. It requires the ability to work in downtown Minneapolis and in a high-rise corporate office setting. Typical of a corporate office setting, Capella’s office space:
  • is designed with an open work space setting and common fluorescent lighting
  • includes frequent co-worker interaction and corresponding noise levels
  • is subject to inside environmental conditions
Sedentary work:
  • this role is mainly a sedentary role with frequent sitting and occasional walking and/or standing.
  • this role involves frequent usage of a telephone, PC and standard monitors.
  • this role has minimal lifting requirements, may require exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
Requires minimal (0–10 percent) business travel:
  • may occasionally require travel to on-site Capella events such as Commencement or off-site Capella University leadership meetings as requested and based on business needs. All travel must be pre-approved and arrangements made according to Capella’s policies/procedures.
Workhours:
  • the University’s general office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST. Work hours and starting times may vary depending on the job and the business needs. Some positions will have a specified starting time, and may be earlier or later, depending upon business requirements.
  • the normally scheduled workweek for all full-time employees consists of 40-45 hours.
