Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking a Youth Program Associate to deliver impactful programs to youth in our urban libraries. In this role you will provide a safe and welcoming environment for all patrons, create drop-in programming, and work with youth from a wide range of backgrounds and socio-economic statuses.

Location and hours:
This position will be located at the North Regional Library which is located at the intersection of Lowry and Fremont Avenues, and functions as a community hub for the residential neighborhoods surrounding it. It is one of the busiest libraries in our system of 41, and is located in an area that is densely populated with youth and we serve as community safe space for kids and teens in the role of caring adults in their lives. We offer youth, via a partnership with the school system, a year-round snack program and a summer lunch program. North Regional Library is a critical resource for finding jobs, using computers, and getting technical assistance.

The schedule will include daytime, evening, and weekend hours. North Regional Library is open to the public 62 hours each week; Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 9 am to 8 pm; Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, Noon to 5 pm.

In this position, you will:
• Deliver and evaluate programs, especially for youth; assess needs and interests of young people and align programs that promote teambuilding and cultivate leadership.
• Proactively maintain a welcoming and safe environment by managing patron, especially youth, behavior in the library and working with security staff as necessary to address challenges.
• Assist staff and patrons with routine to complex needs related to the use of library technology and resources, online and downloadable materials, library computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers, and audiovisual equipment; continue to learn about and demonstrate skill in the use of evolving and emerging technology used by patrons, especially youth; may instruct patrons in the use of electronic resources.
• Provide or assist with story times, group tours, and orientation to the library.
• Perform a variety of patron service and materials handling tasks as needed, including assisting patrons with their accounts, collecting fines and fees, preparing financial and other reports, and processing materials for circulation; assist with a broad range of requests for information related to readers’ advisory, focusing on youth and including adults; explain a variety of routine to complex requirements, policies, and procedures regarding patron accounts and services.

Need to have:
• One of the following:
° Bachelor’s degree or higher in library or information science, English, history, education, sociology or a field related to the position.
° Two years or more of post-secondary education in library or information science, English, history, education, sociology, or a related field, and two years of customer service experience.
° Three and half years (42 months) of customer service experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
° Four years or more of customer service experience.

Nice to have:
• Two years or more of experience mentoring or leading youth in an urban setting.
• Experience creating drop-in programming based on the needs and interests of youth.
• Experience creating a welcoming and safe environment.
• Interest in all forms of literacy and informal learning and its application in the field of youth work.
• Creativity and innovation in applying youth development practices to a library setting.
• Enthusiasm for technology and information literacy and providing a wide range of technology assistance to patrons.
• Ability to:
° Work with youth from a wide range of backgrounds and socio-economic statuses.
° Work as part of a team.
° Organize, plan, implement, and manage several projects simultaneously.
° Handle the demands of a constantly changing work environment and workload.
