Material Services Specialist – Bethel University

Job Summary: The Material Services Specialist will assist the Bethel Seminary and University libraries in acquiring, cataloging, and processing materials in all formats and provide administrative support to the Seminary Library.

Responsibilities

  • Cataloging:  Conduct copy cataloging and classification of materials for the Seminary and University libraries in all formats following national, consortial, and local cataloging standards and practices.  Assist with digital projects (processing and describing) from the Bethel History Center and Seminary Library and perform catalog maintenance (weeding, data cleanup, authority control) as needed
  • Acquisitions:  Manage purchase requests for Seminary Library in all formats (including ordering, invoicing, receiving, cancelling, etc.). Assist with ordering as needed for University Library
  • Periodicals: Coordinate print periodicals, including checking in and shelving periodicals; monitoring the physical collection (label boxes, current display, binding, etc.)
  • Circulation desk coverage as needed at the Seminary Library

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of standard cataloging practices, classification schemes, and general procedures in automated systems or related skills
  • Must be able to organize, prioritize and handle multiple duties
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proven ability to learn new software programs

Required Experience

  • Copy cataloging experience preferred
  • One to two years of experience in a library setting or related field strongly preferred

Required Education

Post-secondary training/coursework required; completion of a baccalaureate degree preferred.

  • This is a one year, full-time appointment, with the potential for permanent appointment
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Must be able to work at a computer desk for extended periods of time
