Saint Marys/Rochester Methodist Patients’ Libraries serve hospitalized patients and their families. The Libraries provide recreational and consumer health materials for patients and visitors. Much of the patient and visitor activity in the Patients’ Library is from patients who are away from home and who are hospitalized for long periods of time including transplant and oncology patients. The Patients’ Libraries provide many resources to check out to patients’ rooms including books, magazines, books on tape and CD, music for relaxation, movies on DVD, and equipment to use them including iPads and DVD player loans. The Patients’ Library also provides resources that are available for use within the library, including computers with Internet access, a copier and a fax machine.
The Library Specialist works independently at the Methodist Patients’ Library but also works within a team environment with other staff members at the Saint Marys Patients’ Library. The Library Specialist works with volunteers on a daily basis. The Library Specialist is responsible for the daily operations of the Methodist Patients’ Library, including circulating materials, serials management, ordering supplies, library facility management. The ideal candidate will be self-directed with excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. The Library Specialist works directly with patients and their families. The ideal applicant will be compassionate with a belief in the Mayo primary value that the needs of the patient come first.
Under limited supervision, the Library Specialist II performs and is responsible for complex and specialized library responsibilities requiring independent judgment, creative thought and a thorough understanding of selected principles of libraries, information science and information technology. The Library Specialist II coordinates multiple library services in a public services environment. The Library Specialist II may provide assistance to the supervisor by training and organizing, monitoring and scheduling the work of other employees, students or volunteers with occasional supervisory input. With compassion and respect, the Library Specialist II provides information, reference support or consultation to library customers and colleagues.
Baccalaureate degree in Library Science, Media Services, Education, Computer Science, English or related field strongly preferred. Requires three years experience as Library Specialist I or comparable library experience. A combination of education and experience or eight years of relevant library experience may be considered in lieu of Baccalaureate degree. Knowledge of library systems and electronic applications, including Windows, required. Excellent customer service and communication skills required.
Strong reading and writing skills with knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to work with detail accurately; ability to sort, organize and arrange alphabetically and numerically. Strong communication skills are needed to interact with patients, family members and the healthcare team. Confidentiality must be applied when assisting all library patrons.
Exemption status: Non-exempt
Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $19.99 per hour.
