CLASS SUMMARY:
The first level of the Library Series is responsible for performing the more complex daily operations of the library. Responsibilities may include purchasing; processing accounts payable; maintain periodical titles for regional data base; interacting with customers; ensuring policies and procedures are followed; recommending and purchasing equipment; and managing special projects.

Duties / Responsibilities:
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)Assists patrons in finding and checking out library materials and using public computers.

1. Retrieves, scans, shelves, and repairs returned materials.
2. Catalogues, inventories, and processes materials.
3. Participates in program planning and conducting tours and classes for groups.
4. Reviews work schedule.
5. Conducts outreach visits to schools and other off-site programming areas.
6. Maintains data bases.
7. Performs miscellaneous housekeeping duties, including straightening of furniture, and occasionally cleaning up of bodily fluids.
8. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Qualifications:
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require): High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 years library or related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the duties such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require): None

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:
• Developmental stages of children and their needs;
• Daily library operations, including cataloguing and inventorying;
• Computer operation and related software applications.
• Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) for processing books.

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):
Skill in:
• Organization and time management;
• Working with children independently and in a group setting;
• Programming development.
• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Hours of Work/Physical and Mental Demands:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, feeling, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking.
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to challenging behaviors, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, blood and other body fluids, intense noises and travel.
