The University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) has an internship program designed to provide graduate students in library and information science experience and exposure to the resources and information management challenges within the multi-disciplinary field of transportation. This internship is a great opportunity to apply current information management practices and technologies in an academic and practical environment.
CTS is located in Minneapolis, on the East Bank of the University campus. CTS Library is part of the Minnesota Transportation Libraries program and considered a branch of MnDOT Library.A paid, part-time internship is available starting August 7, 2017.
Eligibility Requirement: Enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLIS program
The internship is intended to be long-term: 12 months or the remainder of the intern’s MLIS program.
Internship Responsibilities
The library intern will handle the following tasks:
- Add metadata to Web content and to research database
- Assist with CTS’ participation in the U of M Digital Conservancy (institutional repository)
- Assist with reference questions, including photo requests
- Assign categories and metadata to photos and other digital objects (digital asset management)
- Review results from various alerts to determine CTS-specific Media Mentions
- Route periodicals to CTS staff and shelve non-routed materials
- Other projects as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to commit to the internship for 12 months or more
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks
- Strong attention to detail
- Interest in embedded and solo librarianship
- Ability to categorize and understand metadata
- Basic familiarity with Web technologies
Official Start: August 7, 2017
This will overlap with the outgoing intern for training purposes.
Wage: $14.00 per hour
Work Schedule: 10 to 14 hours per week, across 2 or 3 weekdays
