Qualifications

Required Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years of relevant library experience.
● Demonstrated knowledge of and professional experience with processing, arrangement, and description of archival collections.
● Demonstrated experience with archival descriptive and metadata standards, including DACS and EAD.
● Demonstrated archival project management experience and success, with evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion with the ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows.
● Excellent oral and written communication skills.
● Position requires operation of a stock picker (unit willing to train).

Preferred Qualifications:
● Master’s degree in related field.
● Ability to work independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment.
● Knowledge of copyright law and fair use as it applies to libraries, archives, and special collections
● Supervisory experience.
● Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, multitasking, and organizational skills.
● Experience using ArchivesSpace or similar archival content management system.

About the Job

Duties and Responsibilities
“The Literary Archives Project Archivist position is a full-time project position through June 1, 2018 in the University of Minnesota Libraries Archives and Special Collections. The position is responsible for increasing access to and use of archival collections in the Upper Midwest Literary Archives (UMLA).”The Project Archivist will work closely with the UMLA Curators and the Head of Archives Processing to lead the management of the project, including planning and overseeing all major activities (timeline, deliverables, workflow, budget management, project documentation, and grant reporting), as well as the physical processing and arrangement of the collection. Project Archivist will also conduct copyright and fair use assessments of archival materials; create collection finding aids; hire, train, and supervise student and volunteer staff; and coordinate project promotion and public engagement efforts. The position reports directly to the UMLA Assistant Curator.

Major duties include:

Archival Processing and Collection Management
● Conducts in-depth background research on the individuals and organizations that created the materials.
● Processes archival materials by following established procedures and protocols within ASC Central Processing as well as professional standards, including rehousing and describing materials, and recommending deaccessioning when appropriate.
● Survey collections for copyright and fair use issues.
● Manages physical space and locations of collections.
● With the Electronic Records Task Force, identify born-digital records and develop processing plans.
● Consult with Libraries’ Preservation Strategist and/or Head of Archival Processing to determine best course of action for fragile, deteriorating, or damaged materials.

Metadata Creation
● Lead descriptive metadata creation following archival metadata standards, such as EAD and DACS, and other best practices.
● Transcribe and record handwritten notes, folder labels, etc. associated with collection materials.
● Create finding aids using Encoded Archival Description.
● Track and maintain created metadata, conduct quality control checks.
● With the Electronic Records Task Force, arrange and describe born-digital records within the collections.

Project Management
● Provide regular, up-to-date information on progress/project issues to UMLA Assistant Curator and other project team members.
● Develop and implement overall work plan with and manage milestones for project completion.
● Prepare statistical/tracking information to include in reports to granting agency.
● Supervise student and volunteer staff in processing and description tasks.
● Manage project documentation, including creation of copyright and fair use assessments and the creation of other resources for future projects.
● Assist with project budget and grant reporting.

Project Promotion and Outreach
● Coordinate and assist with project promotion and public engagement efforts, including identifying opportunities and event planning/management.
● Write promotional materials for print and online publication highlighting the project.
● Identify items for potential physical and/or online display.
● Record descriptive information for items for potential physical and/or online displays.
