Master’s degree in related field
Previous project management experience
Previous experience with archival description and metadata standards
Experience with encoding/mark-up languages
Experience with digitization of archival materials
Experience handling fragile materials and identifying preservation concerns
Strong verbal and written communication skills

OVERVIEW
The University of Minnesota Archives seeks to hire a Project Archivist to assist in a digital conversion project of audio recordings related to the University’s radio station, KUOM.  Each converted audio recording will be reformatted to a digital archival format, receive descriptive and technical metadata, pass a quality control check, and will be made publicly available through the University of Minnesota’s online UMedia Archive as well as shared through the Digital Public Library of America and the American Archive for Public Broadcasting websites. The Project Archivist oversees all aspects of project tasks under supervision of Principal Investigator including sequencing materials for transfer to vendor; creating descriptions for digital objects; implementing quality control measures; identifying and updating collection management information; and promoting the project and availability of digital content. This is a temporarily funded position for the University of Minnesota Archives. The position reports to the University Archivist.

DUTIES
Project Management (30%)
– Conducts detailed background research on related individuals, departments, and programs
– Develops overall work plan and selection matrix with milestones for project completion
– Surveys identified collections and selects specific materials within project scope for digitization
– Sequences and prepares collections for digitization production and shipment to vendor
– Coordinates pre/post-vendor management of materials with the Digital Libraries Services
– Oversees encapsulation or re-housing of materials during pre/post-digitization production

Metadata Creation (40%)
– Leads metadata production including maintaining spreadsheets, encoding digital object links into EAD (Encoded Archival Description) finding aids, and making collection record edits in ArchivesSpace
– Creates original metadata for digitized objects including descriptive, technical, and administrative information
– Transcribes and records handwritten notes and index cards associated with objects
– Oversees quality control checks on newly created digital files
– Follows national/professional descriptive standards

Repository Access (20%)
– Prepares batched packages of content and metadata for upload into digital repository
– Crosswalks metadata for inclusion in Digital Public Library of America (Dublin Core/MODS) and the American Archive for Public Broadcasting (PBCore)
– Provides quality control for metadata records after upload into the repository

Project Promotion & Reporting (10%)
– Provides up-to-date information on progress to Principal Investigator on regular basis
– Prepares statistical/tracking information to include in reports to granting agency
– Writes promotional materials to highlight project and purpose (e.g. blog posts)
– Identifies content for use in post-project exhibit/promotion
