Under close supervision, the Library Assistant I performs a variety of general library support tasks following policies and procedures for one or more areas of the library. This position provides routine library services and information in public services or technical services settings, service desk and office support for the library, basic access services to internal and external library users, and refers requests to appropriate supervisor or other staff. Strong interpersonal skills as well as problem-solving abilities are needed to apply policies and procedures and provide library services in a complex knowledge environment. The Library Assistant I performs a variety of tasks that may include shelving, retrieving, recording requests, copying materials, data entry or other specified technical functions. Must be able to work independently if working evenings and weekends in a public services setting, sometimes covering the library site alone.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Keyboarding skills and aptitude for working with online systems required. Familiarity with typical office equipment such as telephone, fax, computers, scanners, audiovisual equipment and copiers. Excellent communication and customer service skills required. Knowledge of library procedures through use of the library or library-related experience preferred.
Prefer prior library work experience or education in library science or information technology. Strong reading and writing skills with knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to work with detail accurately; ability to sort, organize and arrange alphabetically and numerically.
Exemption status: Non-exempt
Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $13.94 per hour.

Schedule details: Schedules may vary depending on library needs and Library Assistant’s availability to work. Mutual flexibility in scheduling will be applied. Daytime, evening and weekend hours are available.
