The City of Rochester invites applications for the position of: Limited Appointment Library Aide III – Youth Services (13.5-40 hours per week for 12 weeks over the summer months)

Rochester Public Library (MN) seeks a creative and enthusiastic Library Aide III who enjoys working with youth and has a passion for public service. The successful candidate will possess crackerjack customer service skills, a strong interest in youth services, top-notch communication skills, and super-duper technology skills.

Responsibilities of the position include providing incredible customer service to children, teens, and the grown-ups who care for and work with them at the Youth Services information desk, assisting with programming including outreach on our award-winning BookBike, and many other unbelievably exciting duties as assigned.

Nature of Work
This is a public service position with responsibility for public service work at the Youth Services information desk, assisting with programming and other support tasks as assigned. Work is performed under the overall supervision of the Division Head. Work involves learning complex programs and databases to find information needed by the public. Individuals in this position are also required to learn and interpret policies and procedures of the library. Work includes a great deal of contact with the public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment or location.

*Public Service
• Serve the public at the Youth Services information desk by responding to informational inquiries in person, by phone and email and explaining and enforcing library policies and procedures.
• Assist customers in the use of the online catalog, ebook resources, online databases, Internet stations, Pharos reservation stations, printing, game stations, iPad stations and other technology.
• Meet the City’s RISE standards in all interactions with the public and staff.

*Miscellaneous Duties
• Maintain assigned areas or collections such as Art Room, Minnesota Children’s Museum Smart Play Spot, Discovery Cart, magazines, new books, or booklist displays.
• Assist with programming for children, teens, and caregivers, which includes active participation at outreach events.
• Provide customer service including materials check-out, answering reference questions, and assisting with art or other activities via RPL’s BookBike.
• Check returned items such as Kits for Kids, Book Group in a Bag for Kids, Science Kits and other bundled items for missing and damaged items.
• Pull materials from the shelves for weeding, programs, displays, etc. as directed.

Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
High school diploma or the equivalent AND one year providing customer service
Experience with computer software

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Some post-secondary education obtained from a community college, business/vocational school or a degree from an accredited college or university.
Previous work in a library or teaching experience
Experience working with children and/or teens
Ability to speak and/or read a language other than English

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: computer operations, including Microsoft Office Suite and/or library related software; correct grammar and spelling.

Skill in: providing excellent customer service, working pleasantly and effectively with co-workers and the public, especially youth.

Ability to: communicate effectively; follow both written and verbal instructions; use mathematical processes; file and organize both alphabetically and numerically; work alongside, support and value volunteers.
