Hennepin County Library’s (HCL) Library Services Division is seeking enthusiastic, engaged individuals to fill current and future Librarian openings in youth services and adult services. Librarians play a key role in providing services in libraries, online, and in the community. Librarians lead and support staff in delivering a variety of library programs and services with a strong emphasis on facilitating community engagement.

Librarians are project managers and program designers who create, deliver, and evaluate programs to meet community needs. They contribute to system-wide projects, including leading or serving on committees and teams to solve problems, improve service, or promote innovation. Librarians are essential members of teams that enable us to accomplish our mission to nourish minds, transform lives, and build communities together. HCL is seeking individuals interested in shaping the future and being responsive to changes in our cities and neighborhoods.

The schedule for these positions include full-time and part-time opportunities, and all staff schedules include evening and weekend shifts.

HCL serves more than one million residents of the city of Minneapolis and suburban Hennepin County. The 41 library system offers more than 5 million books, CDs, and DVDs, materials in more than 40 languages, 1600 public computers, and an extensive website.

In addition to current openings this list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, and on-call vacancies. The three current openings are full-time positions at Brookdale Library, Champlin Library, and one position that will travel among Westonka, Maple Plain, and St. Bonifacius Libraries.

The primary duties and responsibilities of these positions include:
• Partner with the community to expand the role of the library there; lead local community engagement.
• Provide program and project management and/or serve on a team as a leader or member.
• Provide excellent customer service to community members of all ages and abilities and from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
• Contribute to creating a welcoming, engaging, and safe learning environment.
• Create a positive work environment through flexibility, accountability, and leadership.
• Support youth in their developmental and learning needs which may include leading storytimes, school visits, and group programs.
• Reach out to community organizations; develop and maintain relationships and collaborate to create services and programs that fit local needs and interests and that reflect the mission of HCL.
• Deliver and assess programs and services based on community needs.
• Provide information and reader services connecting patrons to resources in a variety of formats in library buildings and online.
• Instruct library patrons in the use of the catalog, electronic databases, eBook access, and the evolving world of online and library resources.
• Contribute to the management and promotion of the library’s collection.

Best Qualified Candidates will have:
• An ALA (American Library Association) accredited master’s degree or higher in library science or information science.
• A commitment to public service and experience providing customer service, instruction, or outreach to customers of all ages and backgrounds.

Experience:
• Interacting with children and/or teens in a work or volunteer setting.
• Connecting patrons to resources in multiple formats to meet information and learning needs.
• Building community connections with a wide variety of organizations, including schools, to collaborate, develop, and deliver programs or services.
• Knowledge of, and enthusiasm to keep learning about the tools used by patrons and library staff, such as library applications, social media, databases, eReaders, word processing spreadsheets, and 3D printers.
• Ability to be patron-focused and flexible, adjusting the services delivered as community needs, resources, and technology evolve.
