Qualifications
Required:

Masters’ degree from an American Library Association accredited library school and/or an advanced degree with relevant experience.
Experience processing archival collections.
Previous instruction experience in a library or higher education setting.
Experience in managing projects.
Demonstrated ability and to support, respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view in order to provide an environment that fosters an inclusive community.

Preferred:

Demonstrated creativity, initiative, self-direction, and innovative thinking.
Ability to successfully navigate highly collaborative efforts with multiple stakeholders.

Institutional Archivist, University of Minnesota Archives

The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus Libraries seeks a dynamic, collaborative individual for the position of Institutional Archivist to be part of a team to provide collection management, reference, instruction, and outreach services for the University of Minnesota Archives and within the broader efforts of the Department of Archives & Special Collections (ASC). The Institutional Archivist participates in processing planning and description of institutional records in support of user access, the mission of the University Libraries, and the University’s system-wide strategic plan to “advance a deeper understanding of institutional history.” The Institutional Archivist integrates technologies, processes, resources, and people to sustain in-person and digital access to archival collections for all types of research use. Using a suite of tools and several digital repository programs including the University of Minnesota’s institutional repository, the University Digital Conservancy (UDC); UMedia, a digital collection of digitized primary source materials; and a growing digital records program of the department, the Institutional Archivist contributes new digital content for access purposes through collecting online institutional content, digitization projects, and digital records accessions. The Institutional Archivist is an expert in collection building, community-focused services, and archives-based instruction.

This position will work in partnership with faculty in the Department of History and the Heritage Studies and Public History program, including with the newly appointed Professor of History, Universities and Power incumbent who is charged with investigating how institutions of higher education affect their communities in ways that reproduce social power and inequity. Collaborations may include team-teaching, exhibit development, and mentoring graduate students and internships in public history and archival studies.

Responsibilities
The Institutional Archivist for the University of Minnesota Archives will take an active role in managing the existing and on-going acquisition, arrangement and description, and discoverability of administrative and system-wide collections, both physical and electronic, that document the University’s history. The incumbent will be expected to provide critical and independent judgment in conducting detailed research and analysis in support of complex institutional requests for historical information and supports a diverse user population working with archival collections. The Institutional Archivist will also engage collaboratively with faculty and students to promote and support the inclusion of institutional archives and public history-related service-learning initiatives and instruction into the curriculum of the Department of History and the Heritage Studies and Public History Program.

The University of Minnesota Archives is one of 15 distinct collecting areas in a highly collaborative department located in the Elmer L. Andersen Library. The position reports to the Head of the University Archives and Co-Director of the University Digital Conservancy. The Institutional Archivist will contribute to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, working toward continuous appointment status.

This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous appointment track academic professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant Librarian rank with the potential for appointment at the Associate Librarian rank.
