About the Job
This is a 100%, 12 month P&A Assistant Librarian position. The position closes on October 24, 2022. Minimum salary is $47,482.21 commensurate with experience.

Position Overview

The person in this position provides leadership and direction for the library’s information literacy instruction program, including planning, implementation, collaboration with campus partners, instruction-related onboarding and ongoing training for teaching librarians, student learning assessment, and annual program statistics reporting. As part of the Research & Learning Team, this person will share responsibility for delivering information literacy instruction for courses within the College and Advanced Writing Program.

For assigned departments/programs, this librarian provides specialized research support services, selects information resources, creates learning objects, and provides information literacy instruction for courses. The person in this position participates in Research & Learning Team meetings, activities, and projects; serves on teams and groups working on library-wide initiatives; and contributes to the library profession and/or campus. Assigned programs for this position are: Academic English Language Program (in the Department of Education) and the College and Advanced Writing Program (in the Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies).

Essential Job Functions:

Information Literacy (60%)
● Provide leadership and direction in the planning, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of the library’s information literacy instruction program
● Advocate for the library’s role in teaching and learning and communicate the value of information literacy to the campus community through participation in relevant campus initiatives and committees, including the College and Advanced Writing Program Committee
● Encourage, lead, and empower teaching librarians in their teaching-related professional development and workload management through collaborative learning, individual consultations, co-teaching, and reflective practice
● Lead the collaborative design and delivery of information literacy faculty development
● Coordinate information literacy instruction for required first-year writing course, WRIT 1120: College Writing, including communicating with course instructors, maintaining library Canvas modules, collaboratively designing lesson plans, and assigning course sections to librarians
● Lead the library’s student learning assessment efforts, completing the annual assessment report and maintaining the library’s assessment plan in accordance with campus assessment requirements
● Develop, maintain, and share knowledge of instructional design, inclusive pedagogy, and information literacy instruction and assessment
● Document the activities, effectiveness, and needs of the instruction program through statistical analysis, reports, and presentations
● Support subject liaison librarians in the creation of learning objects
● In collaboration with the Scholarly Communications Librarian, identify and pursue opportunities to increase awareness and adoption of open pedagogy and open educational resources on campus
● Provide input on library teaching space improvements as needed

General Responsibilities as a Member of the Research & Learning Team (20%)
● Provide general research support to library users during scheduled hours
● Provide foundational information literacy instruction to classes in College Writing and College in the Schools
● Assist students and other researchers in evaluating resources and refining topics for research
● Continuously develop expertise in database and web searching
● Serve as a member of the Research & Learning Team and participate in team meetings
● Participate in team events and initiatives
● Work cooperatively with library staff
● Keep current on professional issues related to research support services
● Share information on resources and research skills with colleagues
● Document data on research transactions and instruction sessions

Liaison Assignments (10%)
For assigned programs: Academic English Language Program and Writing Program
● Provide in-depth research support in assigned subject areas
● Develop and use expertise in knowledge and use of information resources
● Keep current on academic trends and changes
● Monitor assigned databases and keep library users informed of changes
● Provide information literacy instruction for courses in subject areas
● Create and update course and research guides
● Develop good working relationships with faculty to support teaching and research
● Assess user needs to develop and maintain relevant, high quality services and information resources

Library-Related Professional Service and Engagement (10%)
● Attend library, UMD, and community meetings and events
● Serve on University committees, boards, or projects
● Engage in professional development
● Contribute to the profession through organizational work, presenting at conferences, or publishing

Qualifications
Qualifications/Overview:

Required:
● ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience
● Coursework or experience in information literacy pedagogy and/or instructional design, informed by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education and/or Understanding by Design
● Demonstrated experience with proposing and/or implementing actions that improve equity and inclusion in your work
● Demonstrated experience building collaborative relationships with colleagues, library users, and/or community partners
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills
● Experience designing or delivering learning experiences

Preferred:
● Coursework or experience in student learning assessment
● Experience providing research assistance in a library
● Relevant subject degree or other background/expertise
