The James J. Hill Center, formerly the James J. Hill Reference Library, is a private, non-profit, business and entrepreneurial center, located in historic downtown Saint Paul on Rice Park. Since 1921, the Hill Library has housed a world-class collection of practical business information resources. Our mission is “connecting entrepreneurs, business and community.” In addition to our business information, we also host numerous non-profit, corporate, and community events.
We are a small organization with an incredible opportunity to take our ninety-five-year institution to the next level. We are seeking a motivated and self-directed Director of Reference Services to join our team. This position reports to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities for this role include:
• Provides reference service to patrons in person, on the phone, and via email
• Manage our print collection and our database services and renewals
• Collect testimonials from patrons and create the story of our services to share with the community
• Create presentation materials for outreach programming with assistance from the Director of Marketing
• Liaison with workforce centers, DEED and SBA MN for ongoing programming
• Lead guided tours of the library and deliver the history of the organization to visitors
• Supervise reference and administrative coordinator including scheduling to ensure consistent coverage for research patrons and front desk during public open hours
• Utilize NEON database to track all patron usage of services and vendor communications
• Work with Director of Development in identifying funding sources for research database subscriptions
• Attend mission related events as needed
Position Requirements:
• Minimum of 3 years of library experience
• Skill in applying library research methods and practices
• Ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner
• Excellent computer skills a must with experience in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to present at workshops and educational seminars as needed
• Previous supervisory experience a plus
• Master’s Degree in Library Science, or Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association, and professional library experience, preferably in an administrative and/or managerial/supervisory capacity
