The Role

At Capstone, our Director of Metadata Services leads a team responsible for managing our product’s metadata and information assets, which is crucial to Capstone’s digital growth strategy. We’re looking for someone who understands how important metadata is to both our external customers being able to find our products and to our internal teams as a partner in product management.

The Director of Metadata Services must be forward-thinking, phenomenal at prioritizing, and skillful at understanding processes and how they work together. In this role you’ll form relationships with every department and be a strategic and decisive leader for the Metadata Services department.

This role requires high-level experience in metadata. Experience in publishing metadata, MARC record cataloging and ONIX are preferred.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Systems Management

Manage system administration of Biblio software and maintenance, including product setup and entry activities in alignment with strategy, process, and quality control requirements. Oversee all final data audits and approvals to meet seasonal milestone dates impacting Capstone product metadata and MARC record data and levelling.
Design metadata architecture in support of digital product strategy and user experience requirements (in addition to traditional commerce requirements). Provide current information on best practices on MARC record cataloging rules, routines, and library classifications.
Provide high-level ONIX troubleshooting, including Biblio setup and cross-departmental consulting. Oversee the onboarding and delivery of metadata feeds via ONIX. Provide assistance and support to the organization’s Specs on File database program, printed library processing products, and collection analysis program.
Collaboration and Vendor Support

Partner with product management and software engineering to create robust back-end metadata systems and provide troubleshooting of product data integration with all relevant systems.
Collaborate to ensure cross-functional continual process improvements, best practices for data/asset management, and training for company employees.
Oversee vendor relationships associated with publishing product and MARC metadata and act as a company representative on various industry data trade groups.

Metadata Services Team Management

Assign, coordinate, and prioritize workload for team members, and establish strategic and annual operating plans. Management of Service Request site and metrics.
Serve as Product Owner (hands-on analyst) in the Metadata Services Scrum Team Framework
Leadership

Lead, mentor, and motivate the Metadata Services team. Inspire others to create a positive, collaborative, and innovative work environment.
Lead, mentor, assess, and support team members in their development and as they perform their roles within the company.

Education, Experience and Skills

MLIS degree from an ALA accredited library school with coursework in cataloging or equivalent work experience
Experience in book publishing, K-12 library or EdTech markets, and management.
Familiarity with publishing metadata, MARC record cataloging, ONIX, and Biblio or other publishing title management systems.
Microsoft Office skills, especially Outlook and Excel.
Scrum Certification or experience working in a Scrum framework preferred.
Strong interpersonal and presentation skills including via teleconference (Zoom and similar) and by phone.
Enjoys working in a fast-paced work environment with the desire and ability to work and thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.
Excellent technical skills, attention to detail, goal-oriented, ability to lead, ability to solve problems and share expertise under minimal guidance.
Strong quality management, troubleshooting skills, and understanding of business implications and website appropriateness.

Travel Requirements

Work will be via teleconference (Zoom and similar) initially, but up to 10% travel may be required in the future.
