DESCRIPTION: This position exists to provide professional expertise and technical support in the interpretation and application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The Design Reviewer serves as a resource in working directly with grant applicants, including federal, state, and local agencies, private individuals, community organizations, public/nonprofit organizations, and the architects, tradespeople, and others associated with their preservation projects. The position provides advice on best practices in historic preservation to the larger history field and public in Minnesota. The employee serves as a design reviewer for the Minnesota Historical Society’s grant programs and as the statewide design coordinator for the Minnesota Main Street program, a partnership with Rethos.

SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) Provide professional and technical support to the Grants staff. The Design Reviewer will need to consult, review, evaluate, respond, coach, recommend, report on, and monitor historic preservation grant projects and applications; 2) Provide professional outreach services, assistance, and educational opportunities the local history network and those connected to historic buildings; and 3) Provide design services and preservation education to Minnesota Main Street communities, through a partnership with the state coordinating program funded by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree.

Five years experience in historic preservation, preservation planning or equivalent.

Experience in the grant application or historic preservation review and compliance processes.

Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Historic Architecture: a professional degree in architecture or a state license to practice architecture, plus graduate study in architectural preservation, American architectural history, preservation planning, or closely related field or professional experience in working on historic preservation projects, including detailed investigations of historic structures, preparation of historic structures reports, and preparation of plans and specifications for rehabilitation projects.

Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Historic preservation programs, including a thorough understanding of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

American and Minnesota history, as well as architectural development and technology.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced degree in architecture, historic preservation, or a closely related field.

Highly developed interpersonal skills to negotiate, mediate, and collaborate with a wide variety of people with a diverse range of knowledge, skills, backgrounds, education, and interests.

Familiarity with computer-aided design, image manipulation software (e.g., Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc.), and Microsoft Office software

Experience using a digital SLR camera for architectural photography.

One to three years’ experience working in or volunteering with a history organization with demonstrated ability to work independently and successfully with people in completing projects requiring adherence to specific, detailed, and technical guidelines.
