Position Description
Metropolitan State University, a vibrant and growing public, urban university is seeking applicants for the position of Dean of Library and Information Services. The Dean is charged with the leadership for Library and Information Services to meet the strategic needs of the university, students, Library faculty and staff, and our community partners. The dean provides vision for the development of resources and services that meet the scholarly and intellectual needs of the university community and works closely with other university officers to advance the overall needs of the university. The dean also manages the services and physical facility of the Library and Learning Center

Specific responsibilities of the position include strategic planning, library program and service evaluation and development, assistance with university accreditation, community outreach, fund raising, recruitment and selection of faculty and staff, building and fostering cooperative relationships, and managing the finances and budget of library and information services. S/he is directly responsible for the evaluation of library faculty based on their professional development plans and carries out all the activities related to promotion and tenure. The dean is the chief administrative officer for library services and as such will provide vision, planning, organization, development, implementation, assessment, and direction of all aspects of library services which including remote services and multiple locations. In addition, the dean facilitates cooperative services with the Saint Paul Public Library which has a branch in our Saint Paul campus library and with other libraries throughout the Minnesota State System.

Responsibilities
• Develop, recommend, implement and evaluate high quality innovative academic programs for Library and Information Services that serve students at all Metropolitan State University locations. Promote the Library’s educational and research activities. Coordinates the overall assessment and evaluation of the Library’s programs.
• Provide leadership and supervision that emphasizes commitment and sensitivity to diversity in the recruitment, hiring, promotion, tenure, evaluation and professional development of faculty and staff of the Library. Directs the work of faculty and staff, including the approval of faculty assignments and staff position descriptions, training, and orientation of new employees, approval and/or critique of work and performance, and approval of time records and leave requests.
• Enhance and inspire an academic climate that will promote excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. Create an environment of mutual respect that supports a socially responsible community, enhances cultural diversity, and inspires others to work toward common goals.
• Develop and strengthen cooperative arrangements with other institutions to expand and improve services to both the university faculty and students and also the broader public community which the university and the library facility serve.
• Participate in University planning, policy-making and executive leadership of the University.
• Provide leadership for program development and implementation; student learning assessment; program evaluation and assessment; external shareholders and community partners; and budgets.
• Manage complex tasks and adapt to changing institutional priorities using a collaborative and collegial work style.
• Provide consultation for handling personnel problems, responding to employee complaints and grievances, and addressing unusual situations.
• Support involvement and contributions by faculty, staff and students to encourage a dynamic professional/scholarship development program in the Library.
• Promote a culture of engagement, inclusion, and innovation.
• Supervise and promote professional development of faculty and staff.
• Develop, review and approve all program planning, Library budgets and fiscal plans and implement plans within the approved budget framework.
• Provide leadership in assuring a hospitable environment for a diverse student population and community stakeholders.
• Maintain an educational environment which supports the interests and needs of underrepresented groups.
• Represent the University within the academic community and in professionally related activities of the local, state, regional and national levels and build relationships with organizations to support the work of Library and Information Services.
• Serve as the university’s Intellectual Property Coordinator.
• Serve on the Provost’s Academic and Student Affairs Executive Council (ASAeC) and the President’s Cabinet
• Identify, cultivate, involve and solicit the community, alumni, and friends of the university in developing and sustaining an active external fundraising program.
• Serve as a reference librarian or in another librarian capacity between 8-10 hours per week.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
• An earned terminal degree in library and information science (MLS) from a program accredited by the American Library Association
• 5+ years of library experience related to position responsibilities including collection development and reference in an academic or public library; 3+ years of administrative experience as a coordinator, director, or department chair.
• Previous supervisory experience.
• Excellent communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
• A record as an accomplished academic leader with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• History of working collaboratively with students/staff/faculty in a team environment.
• A demonstrated commitment to the mission of an urban-focused university.
• A demonstrated commitment to cultural, ethnic, and gender diversity, affirmative action, and equal opportunity and a history of accomplishment in enhancing campus diversity.
• Computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with innovative Library and Information Services programs, approaches, or modes of delivery.
• Experience with nontraditional students.
• Experience with continuing quality improvement and/or organizational development.
• Administrative leadership experience in a collectively bargained higher education institution.

Salary: This Administrator position is assigned to a Range 8, as outlined in the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (Minnesota State) Personnel Plan for Administrators (see link below), and is commensurate with education and experience.
