SALARY:    $5,511.00 monthly minimum, commensurate with experience

STATUS & HOURS:    Full-time, regular (approximately 2,088 annual hours) position.

BENEFITS:     Eligible to participate in the State Employee Group Insurance Program and a retirement program with employer contribution.  Generous vacation and sick time accruals with additional paid holidays.

DESCRIPTION:  This position exists to lead the development and execution of the MNHS communications plans, strategy, and key messages.

The Communications Manager will proactively initiate, manage and coordinate communication strategies that: anticipate and respond to crisis communications; protect MNHS’ strong reputation; raise awareness about the MNHS mission, brand, programs, and strategic initiatives; and build attendance at MNHS sites, events and programs. The Communications Manager will oversee media relations functions for MNHS, work closely with Leadership, and build strong relationships with the news media statewide, regionally, and nationally.

SUMMARY OF WORK:  1) Work with the account management team and internal clients to develop and implement marketing and communications strategies to support the business objectives of MNHS’s key programs and strategic initiatives; 2) Manage assigned internal client relationships; 3) Oversee communications to the media; 4) Serve as a lead copywriter and editor for the organization’s marketing and communications content; and 5) Provide overall direction for placing, training, supervising and motivating assigned staff, interns, and volunteers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, English or related fields preferred.

  • Seven years marketing communications, media relations or public relations-related experience.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Willingness and ability to travel.

  • Supervise staff, writing work plans and actively managing employee’s performance to ensure success towards organizational goals.

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS IN:

  • Prepare strategies and develop ideas that deal with changing environments while considering the various challenges that lie ahead to resolve a situation or to achieve a business goal.

  • Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent writing (detail-orientation and organization) and creative skills.

  • Write and edit organizational communications.

  • Write scripts and talking points.

  • Successfully utilize Google Business Suite or Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and HTML preferred.

  • Communicate successfully both orally and written when communicating to both external partners and internal teams in formal and informal meetings and presentations.

  • Have an analytical mind and interest in using data to optimize/scale blog marketing strategies and tactics.

  • Have a flexible and enthusiastic approach to work, including the humility and grace to work effectively with others in a collaborative workplace, and a “can do” attitude.

  • Have an eye towards opportunity; is self-motivated; savvy around cultural and news events and happenings.

  • Customer service and interpersonal communications skills sufficient to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Multitasking, working effectively under pressure to meet deadlines, prioritizing and adapting to changing priorities.

  • Working independently and taking individual initiative while also being able to collaborate effectively and contribute positively in a team environment.

  • Work with external contractors and agencies.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Social media marketing communications strategies.
  • Communications and media practices; local media and media contacts.

  • Knowledge of Cision, Meltwater or other media database and distribution service.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience working as a journalist.

  • PRSA APR certification or past certification.

  • Agency account management experience.

  • Agile marketing experience.
