Qualifications

Required:
• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited library school or an advanced degree with relevant experience.
• Experience scheduling, motivating, and supervising student staff from diverse communities and cultures.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and lead projects and manage workflows.
• Experience with bibliographic, holdings, and item data using library management systems and national bibliographic utilities.
• Proven analytical skills applied to bibliographic problem-solving, including evaluation of bibliographic and item records to determine duplication, title and edition differences, etc.
• Evidence of excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment.

Preferred:
• Copy cataloging experience, applying current standards and systems including AACR2, RDA, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and OCLC Connexion and library management and discovery systems.
• Experience with editing tools such as MARCedit, OpenRefine, PyMARC.
• Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma library management system and OCLC Connexion.

About the Job
The University of Minnesota Libraries is undertaking a year-long project to assess and deduplicate monographic holdings, validate serial holdings, ascertain whether there are electronic surrogates for serial titles held in print, and remediate/enhance metadata for future collection/metadata projects. The Project Librarian will work closely with the directors of the Collection Management & Preservation department and the Data Management & Access department, chairs of the Collection Management Coordinating Committee (CMCC), and reports directly to the Director of Data Management & Access.

Collection Management Coordinating Committee
The Collection Management Coordinating Committee implements policies and projects to manage circulating print collections in ways that ensure continuing access to materials while ensuring optimal use of the Libraries’ physical space. The committee is responsible for:

• Conducting data analysis on monographic collections in partnership with a vendor.
• Planning and overseeing a systematic de-duplication project for journals and monographs in all Twin-Cities general collections to maximize efficiency and consistency of practices.
• Planning, prioritizing, and supporting data collection, enhancement, and correction to prepare for future projects to withdraw and/or transfer serials and monographs to remote storage.
• Providing ongoing planning, coordination, oversight, and communication related to collection management plans and operations.

Objectives of the Position
The Collections & Metadata Project Librarian is is responsible for planning, oversight and documentation of all CMCC collection management and data remediation and enhancement projects across the Libraries. The projects include:
• Deduplicating monographs across the UM Twin-Cities campus.
• Validating, or verifying, physical journal holdings.
• Updating bibliographic, holdings and item records as needed.
• Enhancing holdings records with retention notes.
• Over-seeing data correction projects that facilitate future comparison and decision making.

The librarian will work closely with the committee co-chairs on budget needs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Coordinate with supervisor and CMCC to establish workflows and timeline for the following projects: Deduplicating monographs across the UM Twin-Cities campus, validating, or verifying, physical journal holdings, updating bibliographic, holdings and item records as needed, enhancing holdings records with retention notes, and over-seeing data correction projects that facilitate future comparison and decision making.
• Delegate project tasks to project student assistants and coordinate  with supervisor to assign and coordinate higher level tasks to Data Management & Access, Collection Management & Preservation, and Facilities & Operations Management departments.
• Develop project plans, implement each assigned project, and track project performance, specifically to analyze the successful completion of short- and long-term goals.
• Coordinate with other Libraries departments/units to ensure all aspects of the projects are being completed.
• Hire, train, and supervise project student assistants.
• Monitor student budget and communicate regularly with management regarding budget spend-down.

This is a full time, 12-month, academic professional position with a one-year term appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian, with the possibility of extension.
