Position Summary Information

Purpose of this Position
The Cataloging and Government Documents Librarian is a member of the Technical Services Department, and contributes to accomplishing departmental responsibilities which include building a library collection that supports the College’s goal of academic excellence. This includes acquiring needed resources in a timely and economical manner, and efficiently organizing and presenting library collections.

Working closely with other Technical Services, Collections, Reference & Instruction and Loan Services staff, the Cataloging and Government Documents Librarian solves problems and devises new ways to achieve goals throughout the department and library.

Essential Job Functions – Responsibilities

Cataloging and Database Maintenance:
• Performs basic and complex cataloging [both copy and original] for 95% of all books & media purchased or received as gifts for the library collections, as well as several Campus Collections.
• Adds item-specific information regarding local holdings, location, gift data, and special handling.
• Manages withdrawal, replacement, and transfer of items from one location/collection to another, including updating information in automated library system.
• Works closely with Reference & Instruction and Loan Services staff to resolve routine cataloging inconsistencies and problems as they arise.
• In partnership with other cataloging staff, serves as a resource person for other staff concerning OCLC, cataloging, classification, database maintenance, authority control, record loading and workflow issues.

Government Documents:
• Responsible for all aspects of Carleton’s Government Document Collection, including acquisitions and processing.
• Receives Carleton government documents.
• Maintains accurate bibliographic records for documents in automated library system.
• Withdraws superseded volumes, handles errata sheets & other corrections, and coordinates maintenance of the physical documents collection with Loan Services staff.
• Serves as a resource person for other staff concerning Government Document related issues.
• Represents the library at regional and national Government Document meetings.

Additional Job Responsibilities:
• Facilitates and oversees processing of all physical materials.
• Assists in developing, documenting and implementing departmental procedures/goals.
• Prepares reports and statistics, as required.
• Participates in departmental, library, college meetings, committees, events, etc., as appropriate or assigned.
• Participates in activities of the MNObe libraries, and in regional and national professional organizations, as appropriate.

Describe Supervision Received and Exercised:
Reports to the Head of Technical Services. Supervises Technical Services student employees.

This position also supports the Bridge Consortium and works collaboratively and in tandem with peers at the St. Olaf College Libraries to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced. Additionally, this position may be asked to provide services to the St. Olaf College Libraries, and will participate in all appropriate Bridge working groups, meetings, and functions.

Required Qualifications
• MLS from an ALA-accredited program with a minimum of one-three years of experience working in a library or other highly relevant environment.
• Working knowledge of cataloging standards & tools —AACR2, RDA, OCLC, MARC formats, CONSER, LC classification, LCSH, and authority control.
• Cataloging experience in Connexion.
• Ability to plan, coordinate and manage projects.
• Flexibility to cope positively with complex problems in a rapidly-changing work environment.
• Ability to incorporate new technologies and innovations into existing operations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, both oral and written.
• Strong service orientation.
• Interest and ability to contribute to the profession, including research, publication and participation in professional organizations.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience using Ex Libris Alma for cataloging and database maintenance.
• Experience working with Government Documents.
• Experience cataloging electronic resources using MARC or other metadata formats.
• Evidence of innovation in application of cataloging skills to enhance public access.
