Qualifications
Required:
• American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience.
• One year minimum original cataloging experience using current cataloging standards and tools (Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARC21, Library of Congress Classification and Library of Congress Subject Headings).
• Experience with principles of authority control, including selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Experience creating and delivering clear and effective oral presentations.
• Experience working with diverse groups of people.
• Experience working both independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment.
Preferred:
• Experience with OCLC Connexion and library management systems for creating and editing bibliographic and authority records.
• Original cartographic material cataloging experience, utilizing relevant descriptive and encoding standards such as RDA, AACR2, MARC formats, Library of Congress Classification Schedule G, Library of Congress Subject Headings and Genre/Format Terms relevant to cartographic resources.
• Bibliographic knowledge of one or more modern foreign languages.
• Knowledge of geospatial data cartographic concepts and terminology (e.g., scale, coordinates, projection, map production/reproduction processes and types).
• Awareness/familiarity with existing and emerging metadata standards and schemes, such as RDF, XML, Dublin Core, linked data, and BIBFRAME and other metadata schemes used for describing spatial/cartographic data, such as ISO 19115 and FGDC.
• Experience or training in cataloging for the BIBCO or NACO programs.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and lead projects and manage workflows and diverse assignments.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a strong collegial and participative environment.
• Experience in the design and integration of new technologies in cataloging & metadata services.
• Evidence of ability to contribute to librarianship, research, and service and capacity for leadership within the profession.
About the Job
The University of Minnesota Libraries Invites applications for a full-time 12-month, continuous-appointment Cartographic Metadata Librarian. The successful candidate will provide leadership and coordination for cartographic resource cataloging/metadata held by the University of Minnesota Libraries, including the John R. Borchert Map Library, and will contribute to and collaborate with the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial team to create and maintain metadata for the Geospatial Project. In addition, the position will assume primary responsibility for developing policies, procedures, and manage workflows for original and copy cataloging of cartographic resources. Metadata librarians work with the Director of Data Management & Access in coordinating metadata projects, training and mentoring support staff within the unit, and writing documentation. The Cartographic Metadata Librarian will also participate in Libraries-wide efforts, such as digital library metadata development and contribute to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, while working toward continuous appointment status.

Departmental Description
The Data Management & Access Department (DMA) has a diverse portfolio of responsibilities. As a department in the Data & Technology Division, DMA provides leadership, consultative services, and practical application of metadata content standards and schema for discovery and access of Libraries’ materials and resources. The department provides operational leadership for the Libraries’ enterprise integrated library system (Alma), technical leadership for our discovery system (Primo), and expertise and direction for Alma analytics, reporting and the systematic collection and analysis of organizational data for the Libraries. Department staff are actively involved in the national initiatives of the Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), including BIBCO, NACO, SACO, as well as BIBFRAME, and committee activities in the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), and Ex Libris users’ groups (ELUNA and IgeLU).
Metadata Librarians in DMA support discovery of resources in all formats via creation or transformation of metadata for physical and digital resources acquired and managed by the Libraries. They are expected to lead, actively engage and collaborate with appropriate Libraries and coordinate campus library staff in establishing and implementing metadata policy and best practices. The University of Minnesota Libraries is interested in individuals whose record of achievement has been enhanced by exposure to diverse groups, people, or resources.
This position will work closely with staff in the John R. Borchert Map Library, one of the premier map libraries in the country. The Borchert Library is part of the Libraries’ Research & Learning Division. It serves the University of Minnesota community and the State of Minnesota, including other academic institutions, corporate patrons, and the general public. The BTAA Geospatial Data Project is collectively managed by librarians and geospatial specialists at ten research institutions from across the consortium. The project’s Geoportal connects users to digital geospatial resources, including GIS datasets, web services, and digitized historical maps from multiple data clearinghouses and library catalogs.
Position Responsibilities
The Cartographic Metadata Librarian works in a highly collaborative context within the Libraries. The Cartographic Metadata Librarian’s responsibilities include:
• Lead cataloging efforts for the complex copy and original cataloging of sheet maps, atlases, GIS datasets, etc.
• Create and maintain metadata, in collaboration with other team members, for the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial Data Project.
• Design, implement, and manage workflows for original and copy cataloging of cartographic resources.
• Propose, write, and maintain local cataloging documentation and workflows relevant to cartographic materials.
• Supervise cataloging library assistant (1.0 FTE).
• Engage with partners within the Libraries, across other University of Minnesota system campuses, and with consortial partners to advance cataloging and metadata activities, especially in regard to cartographic materials.
The individual will also contribute to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, while working toward continuous appointment status.
This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous-appointment track, academic professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant or Associate Librarian level. The Libraries offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience, with excellent benefits and substantial moving allowance.
