The University of Minnesota – Twin Cities Libraries seeks a collaborative individual for the position of Business Intelligence and Data Analyst to aid in the overall data analysis, assessment, and visualization development for data from library enterprise systems and incorporating into other data streams to support ongoing strategic initiatives.

Reporting to the Director of Library Enterprise Systems (LES), the Business Intelligence Analyst is a key member of the department, supporting the reporting needs for the Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester campus libraries, and the Law Library.  The position will collaborate with departments and service areas within the Twin Cities libraries including Collections and Content Strategy service area, working closely with the Collection Assessment Analyst to support the reporting needs of the Libraries related to collection and content strategy assessment.  The successful candidate will also work with library staff within the access services and information services, and course materials services departments within the Student Success Service Area, regarding data analysis, leading and contributing to initiatives that advance Libraries’ operations and strategic plans.

Located in the Collections and Content Strategy Service Area, the Library Enterprise Systems Department provides enterprise-level information technology systems and services in support of core library operations and, in collaboration with other Libraries units and functions, end-user discovery and access services. The department holds principal responsibility for the enterprise library systems (Ex Libris Alma, Primo/Primo VE, Leganto) that undergird numerous library data management, information retrieval, and transactional services for all University system campus libraries including over 7.7 million volumes.  It also provides the Libraries organization with data analysis and reporting services related to enterprise systems that, for both strategic and operational purposes, support planning and execution, decision-making, and assessment and evaluation.

Position Overview
Guided by the Libraries’ vision, mission and strategic plan, the Business Intelligence and Data Analyst aids in the overall data analysis, assessment, and visualization development for data from enterprise systems and incorporating into other data streams to support ongoing strategic initiatives. This position works closely with the Collection Assessment Analyst to support the reporting needs of the Libraries related to collection and content strategy assessment.  Reporting to the Director of Library Enterprise Systems, the Business Intelligence Analyst is a key member of the department, supporting the reporting needs for the Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester campus libraries, and the Law Library.

Primary Functions:

Data Analysis, Visualization, and Business Intelligence (50%)

  • Responds to business needs for data analysis and reporting for libraries’ staff on all campuses.
  • Designs, deploys, and maintains reports, dashboards and visualizations that support the strategic needs of the Libraries. Manages and maintains scheduled reports within Alma.
  • Creates static and interactive visualizations of statistical data using tools such as the Oracle Analytics Server (“Alma Analytics”), Tableau Desktop, Prep and Server, and Excel.
  • Reviews data structures to ensure data integrity.  Conducts profiling to identify, understand and address data anomalies. Troubleshoots data issues.
  • Works in collaboration with the Collection Assessment Analyst and Library Enterprise Systems Director in providing technical guidance, training and support to other staff in the Collections & Content Strategy service area, and with other relevant library staff across the Twin Cities campus.  Work may also include library staff from the other system campuses.
  • Serves on the Alma Analytics Auxiliary Group.

Operations Analysis & Development (25%)

  • Services on the TDX ticketing triage team, assigning tickets to appropriate staff within multiple departments.
  • Provides business and data analysis recommendations for optimizing performance, especially related to interoperability and integrations of data sources and performance.
  • Provides operational support to the Collection Assessment Analyst and Libraries Assessment Coordinator, including database querying and analyses development.

Project & Business Management (25%)

  • Translates non-technical requirements into technical data specifications. Elicits technical requirements using interviews, use cases, scenarios, library business needs and workflow analysis.
  • Designs and coordinates projects, under guidance of the Collections Assessment Analyst and Director of Library Enterprise Systems, to support business and data analyses needs for overall integration and interoperability of enterprise systems.

Qualifications

Required:

  • BA/BS plus at least two (2) years of experience, or master’s degree.
  • Experience with conducting data analysis and interpretation, and communicating results or recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with enterprise systems.
  • Experience working within academic or public library settings.
  • Experience working with Ex Libris Alma and/or Tableau.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities across multiple stakeholders.
  • Project management experience.

About the Department

Collections & Content Strategy Service Area
The Collections & Content Strategy service area (C&CS) provides leadership in the development, discovery, and long-term stewardship of the University of Minnesota Libraries’ wide-ranging collections. With over 7.7 million print volumes, and millions of electronic resources, the University of Minnesota Libraries’ research collections address all current and emerging areas of study at the University. Our collections are amongst the largest in the country. C&CS directs and oversees the acquisition, licensing, description, and discovery of content to meet the needs of the University community and all those interested in our collections. We also facilitate access to resources held at our extensive network of partner libraries throughout the world. The C&CS service area also develops and stewards the technologies and systems that support the metadata, fulfillment, and discovery of our robust resources for both the Twin Cities campus and the system campus libraries. We provide digitization, management, and preservation of the Libraries’ physical collections to ensure long-term, broad access to those resources in our possession. Our aim is to increase access to, and awareness of, unique resources for scholars throughout the world. We also provide services and expertise to campus content creators on our collections, intellectual property rights, and copyright information while advocating for sustainable models for scholarly communication and information sharing. We work collaboratively with Libraries staff across the University of Minnesota system, campus partners, and external partners to advance the mission of the Libraries and the University.

Library Enterprise Systems Department
The Library Enterprise Systems (LES) department supports the University’s mission of learning, research and outreach activities of the University through providing well-aligned, highly functional, and distinctive information technology services for use by the University and, whenever possible, the global community.

Specifically, LES provides enterprise-level information technology systems and services in support of core library operations and, in collaboration with other Libraries units and functions, end-user discovery and access services. The department holds principal responsibility for the enterprise library systems that undergird numerous library data management, information retrieval, and transactional services for all University system campus libraries, including the Law Library. It also provides the Libraries organization with data analysis and reporting services related to enterprise systems that, for both strategic and operational purposes, support planning and execution, decision-making, and assessment and evaluation. LES carries out these functions through the coalescing of data, analysis, and information technology expertise, and in collaboration with numerous Libraries, University, institutional partners, and professional entities.

LES partners with other departments within the Collections & Content Strategy Service Area, the Access Services and Course Materials departments within the Student Success Services Area, and the Department of Information Technology, regarding systems functionality and configuration, leading and contributing to initiatives that advance Libraries’ operations and strategic plans.
