Nature of Work
This is responsible work in supervising services of a branch library. Employees in this class work independently under the limited supervision of the Library Director or Assistant Director. Position is part time, approximately 14 hours per week, including some evenings and Saturdays.

Essential Functions

Develops and maintains a good library relationship in the community. Works with community groups, city officials, school age children and the general public to promote library services. Works with various sources to raise funds and provide services outside of the library’s normal operating budget. Supervises and schedules branch library staff, and assures that the library is open during scheduled hours. Approves payroll records. Reports supervisory problems to the Director. Attends staff meetings and workshops.

Provides branch circulation and reference services and assures that necessary supplies and current brochures are present; that the desk area is efficiently organized; that patrons receive prompt and courteous service; and compiles activities statistics and reports. Does patron registration and interlibrary loan. Supervises or conducts all children’s programming, including story times and summer reading program, done in the building or at other sites such as day care homes, Headstart, etc. Supervises or conducts all branch services including circulation, patron registration, interlibrary loan, building maintenance, bulletin boards and display cases, audio-visual equipment, computer use and materials rotation.

Assists patrons with selection and checking in and out of materials. Performs receptionist duties at the circulation desk, providing patrons with information and reference services and responding to phone inquiries. Places library materials on hold and sends inter-library loan and reference requests to headquarters or TDS according to established procedures. Notifies patrons when materials are available. Collects service charges for overdue and billed materials. Balances and sends in petty cash.

Performs other work as required. Responsible to observe all Watonwan County safety and health rules and to apply the principles of accident prevention in day-to-day duties.
Desirable Qualifications

Training and Experience
Requires High School graduation and computer experience. Supervisory experience and/or library experience are preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Considerable knowledge of general library procedures and automation. Knowledge of, or ability to learn in a short period of time, the software programs utilized by the library. Knowledge of books, authors and reference materials used in the library and ability to recommend selections and assist patrons in finding materials. Requires general clerical skills, including computer usage, keyboarding and filing.

Ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Ability to supervise and assign duties to branch staff, summer youth workers and volunteers. Ability to maintain good working relationships with the staff, community officials and the general public.

Ability to gain access to all library materials on public shelves and in work area, from the lower levels up to a height of 7 feet.
