Nature of Work
This is responsible work providing circulation and reference service to the public. Work is performed under the supervision of the Branch Manager with additional guidance from the Library Director and Assistant Director. This position is part-time, approximately 20 hours per week, including some evenings and Saturdays.
Essential Functions

Assists patrons with selection and the checking in and out of library materials. Responds to public inquiries over the phone and performs receptionist duties while on circulation desk. Provides patrons with information and reference services. Registers new library patrons.

Places holds for library materials. Collects service charges for overdues, lost materials and billed materials. Unpacks and distributes library materials and communications received in courier tubs. Verifies and sends inter-library loan requests. Assists with keeping statistics for circulation, inter-library loan and reference questions.

Barcodes branch periodicals, keeps current issues on shelves, keeps shelves in order and annually updates collection of back issues. Returns rotation materials to headquarters. Changes new book displays weekly. “Weeds” paperbacks and/or hardcover books. Balances petty cash. Picks up and mails materials at the post office.

May train high school pages. Plans and conducts story time and assists with programs. Assists with or creates library displays and/or art work. Attends staff meetings and workshops as requested by the Director. Performs other work as required.

Responsible to observe all Watonwan County safety and health rules and apply the principles of accident prevention in day-to-day duties.

Desirable Qualifications

Training and Experience
High school graduation or equivalent with some experience working with the public.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Requires basic clerical skills, including computer usage, keyboarding and filing. Knowledge of, or ability to learn in a short period of time, the software programs utilized by the library.

Ability to become familiar with books, authors and reference materials used in the library. Ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Ability to maintain good working relationships with the staff and the general public.

Ability to gain access to all library materials on public shelves and in storage, and to lift materials from the lower levels up to a height of 8½ feet.
