With degrees from the University of Minnesota and Macalester College, I have taught in Minneapolis and El Paso. I have published in a variety of genres from tongue twisters in Spider, a poem in The Wall Street Journal, short fiction in Children’s Playmate, nonfiction in Once Upon a Time and in Cobblestone’s history magazine, Appleseeds, and a mystery in a 2003 issue of Hopscotch.

There are usually good reasons why we search out a particular author or reread a book. With the class I discuss these reasons and together we develop a strong believable character, analyze the point-of-view of that character, and talk about how action can move the plot along with exciting twists and turns. We explore historical fiction since it is through active history that young readers can live and breathe a different era. They can experience a march through the hills of Virginia and sense fear as they approach the Bull Run far from home. I enjoy sharing my writing experiences with drafts, galleys and the challenges of the publishing world.
