Assistant Library Director – New Ulm Public Library

Position Objectives: Under the general direction of the Library Director, to provide adult level reference and program services, oversee circulation services, serve in a supervisory capacity and administer operations in the absence of the Library Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

In the absence of the Library Director, performs the following functions as necessary and when appropriate:
• Administer all activities of the Library.
• Direct and supervise staff work activities.
• Prepare the agenda and attend monthly meetings of the Library Board.
• Oversee facility maintenance activities.

Standard duties:
• Work cooperatively with community organizations and area schools to develop programs and services.
• Coordinate a year-round calendar of library events and programs; schedule and direct programs for adult patrons.
• Recommend purchases of adult reference material, non-fiction and fiction books, AV, and technology to support program needs.
• Coordinate the library’s interlibrary loan activities.
• Provide reference services to patrons in person, by telephone, in emails and through the interlibrary loan system.
• Perform professional librarian services at all of the library’s public desks.
• Prepare publicity materials; write articles for the local paper regarding library events and services.
• Participate in the development and maintenance of the library web page.
• Coordinate staff schedule, including vacations and other periods of authorized leave.
• Maintain a professional awareness of developments in library science, reference resources and media sources for adults.
• Assist in the development and preparation of the library’s annual budget.
• Assist in the evaluation, installation, and maintenance of library technology hardware and software.
• Participate in the hiring, promotion, evaluation and discipline of library staff.

The aforementioned functions are normal for this position.  They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Minimum Requirements
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work.
• Knowledge of existing reference resources in print, non-print and electronic format.
• Knowledge of and the ability to participate in the budgetary process.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply accepted supervisory practices.
• Ability to read and comprehend material and concepts well.
• Knowledge of and proven ability in the use of computers and library related software.
• Knowledgeable about the Internet and proficient in using Internet search engines and web page design and maintenance.
• Knowledge of reader trends in popular authors and books of interest to adults.
• Ability to effectively work with coworkers and the public.
• Skilled in both oral and written communication.

Desirable Training and Experience

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a library related field, a Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution is preferred, and a minimum of three (3) years of library experience, a Master’s degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience. Position requires a valid driver’s license.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position will work approximately two evenings per week and one of four rotating Saturdays.
This position will staff the circulation desk as needed and perform other library duties as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, sitting and speaking or hearing, frequently requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately quiet  location (e.g. library, private office ).
