JOB TITLE: Assistant Children’s Librarian – Part-Time

JOB TYPE: Part-Time 25 hours per week
LOCATION: 105 North Elm Ave., Owatonna, MN
DEPARTMENT: Library
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Assistant Library Director
DIRECTION OF OTHERS: Library Assistants, Clerks, Student Assistants
NATURE OF WORK: Provides library service to children, parents, and caregivers. In charge of children’s service area and its day-to-day operation.

Duties/Responsibilities:

WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Provide a variety of services to the public:
A.  Charge and discharge materials.
B.  Register patrons, update patron files.
C.  Take requests for reserves and interlibrary loans.
D.  Assist in finding and using library materials.
E.  Instruct in use of library technology.
II. Prepare and conduct storytimes and activities for children and families.
III. Promote library service and reading.
IV. Maintain materials, equipment and supplies. Repair or withdraw materials as necessary.
V. Record statistics.
VI. Provide an attractive, safe and inviting atmosphere in the children’s service area. Create and maintain developmentally appropriate displays.
VII. Monitor internet activity.
VIII. Perform other tasks as assigned.

EXTENT AND TYPE OF INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC:
I. Constant contact with children, parents and childcare providers.
II. Greets and assists patrons in the library, answers telephone inquiries, visits schools, conducts story times and other programs for children and families.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION:
Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and equipment relative to this position which shall include, but may not be limited to: audiovisual equipment, computers, copiers, FAX machines, public address system and calculators.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or G.E.D.  Two years’ library or related experience. Experience in working with programs for children. Personal computer competency.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: B.A. or B.S. degree, preferably in Elementary Education

Hours of Work/Physical and Mental Demands:

HOURS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
I. The normal workday shall vary and the normal work week is twenty-five (25) hours.
II.  Indoor office environment.

Lifting, pushing/pulling, or carrying of objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds is sometimes required, with a maximum of forty (40) pounds infrequently required. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of the hands are sometimes required. Audio, visual, and verbal functions are essential functions to performing this position. The majority of the workday is spent indoors.
