Mission of Alphabet Forest: Provide a family educational area at the Minnesota State Fair where vocabulary acquisition is the primary activity, supported by word games, books, and visiting authors. Equally important to the Alphabet Forest mission is modeling this kinesthetic approach to learning for visiting educators, librarians, families, and educationally committed volunteers.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Plan, coordinate and run the day-to-day operations of the Alphabet Forest for the Minnesota State Fair as a part-time, seasonal employee, beginning in the spring through late September. 260 hours estimate.

Essential Functions:
• Daily set-up or clean up of the Alphabet Forest (specific shifts to be determined – opening shift begins at 8 a.m., closing shift ends at approximately 9 p.m.)
• Supervise and train Alphabet Forest staff; coordinate staff schedule during fair.
• Manage volunteer check-in and orientation at each shift change.
• Maintain supplies for activities throughout each day of the fair.
• Recruit volunteers throughout the year and monitor upcoming volunteer shifts during the fair to ensure each shift is covered, making changes or covering shifts when necessary.
• Coordinate the set-up and take down of the Alphabet Forest with Alphabet Forest staff and volunteers. Primary set-up/take down days include the weekend prior to the start of the fair and the day after Labor Day.
• Coordinate the cleaning, storage and repair of all games, materials and fixtures of the exhibit.
• Inventory supplies after fair to determine items and quantities needed for following year.

Additional Responsibilities:
• Coordinate Facebook posts leading up to and during the fair.
• Coordinate teacher folders (contents and assembly).
• Work with Author Coordinator and Featured Authors to design activities for the Author Area.
• Assist with Thank You Notes to volunteers.
• Develop new games or activities, as needed.
• Present Alphabet Forest concept at educational conferences or gatherings, as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Comfortable working with a diverse range of people including children and families
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to lift heavy objects or engage in other strenuous activity
• Background or strong interest in literacy-related projects
• Ability to speak publicly about the project
